Position Summary:

The Manager, Talent and Workforce Policy, supports the Vice President, Strategic Initiatives and is responsible for supporting the execution of industry positions, strategies, and programs on all matters related to building and supporting a dynamic future workforce for the aerospace and defense industry and our member companies.

 

Core Duties and Responsibilities:

This position reports directly to the Vice President, Strategic Initiatives.  The responsibility of the Manager is to support the Vice President for Strategic Initiatives in managing the Talent Leadership Council—consisting of member company CHROs and leaders—and related committees and working groups.  These councils and committees formulate industry positions to be presented to U.S. officials, respond to government inquiries, and form public positions. This position also works closely with AIA’s legislative team to monitor law, regulations, and emerging policy initiatives that affect the more than two million aerospace and defense industry workers.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Support the development of strategies and programs designed to make the industry an attractive and compelling employer of choice among an increasingly diverse and technologically savvy workforce.
  • Coordinates meeting and organizational logistics of councils, committees, and working groups established to address talent, diversity, returning to the workplace, and other priorities.  This includes arranging and tracking regular council and committee meetings, planning AIA talent events, and assisting with membership contact lists.
  • Develops and maintains strong working relationships with counterparts in member companies, governments, and other associations covering workforce policy matters to define issues and focal points. 
  • Reviews and contributes to articles, blogs, reports, and other written materials reporting on A&D workforce policy issues.
  • Tracks news and maintains a summary of recent issues and developments related to A&D workforce policy issues.
  • Research and develop background materials, policy positions, and white papers on specific policy topics; maintains and updates collection of industry best practices.
  • Supports talent and workforce policy internal and external events, including attending and detailed reporting on developments.
  • Represent AIA in Workforce or STEM meetings with partner organizations and government officials.  
  • Serve as a point of contact for coordinating activities and meetings related to talent and workforce for the Vice President, Strategic Initiatives, across AIA on various matters as needed to support Division activities.
  • Work closely with the AIA’s American Rocketry Challenge manager and offer innovative ways to make the competition a best practice in STEM development program and enhance its value for both participants and sponsors.

  • Interest/experience in workforce-related issues and desire to grow as a workforce/talent/A&D policy professional
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and judgement to communicate and coordinate with member company representatives and government officials, including on sensitive policy topics
  • Experience in aerospace or defense-related government, association or corporate position
  • Experience working with or in US government agencies (NASA/DOD/DOT) or congressional committees that oversee aerospace and defense issues
  • Be able to bring new ideas and creative solutions to senior leadership in a clear and defensible fashion

 

 

Qualifications and Experience:

Desired Qualifications:

  • Business writing skills with an ability to communicate in written form to different audiences with minimal oversight
  • Knowledgeable about Federal STEM and/or Workforce policy issues and/or relevant congressional committees
  • Must be comfortable working in a high-visibility environment with strict deadlines
  • Experience with STEM programs
  • Experience with organizations that serve diverse populations and underrepresented groups in aerospace and defense
  • An understanding of the skillsets that are relevant to the industry’s technical and skilled workforce
  • Knowledge of workforce trends, best practices in diversity and inclusion talent acquisition and retention strategies

Education:

  • A Bachelor’s degree or comparable work experience is required
