Job Announcement

This is an exciting opportunity to provide comprehensive behavioral health nursing to adults and youth with mental health, substance use, and intellectual disabilities in a fast-paced and multi-culturally diverse medication clinic. Delivers therapeutic nursing and behavioral health interventions under the supervision of a registered nurse. Dually functions as members of a nursing team and an interdisciplinary team. Provides direct nursing care to individuals including medication administration. Provides support and education regarding medical issues to non-medical team members. Using an electronic health record, documents all services provided. Performs health screenings and support the integration of behavioral and physical health.

Work hours are Monday through Friday and may require one late evening depending on the needs of the site. This position is site based with most duties delivered in the medication clinic.

This position includes a signing bonus of $2,000 (or 1,000 for part-time) for new hires.

Note: This position is .75 FTE (30 hours per week) with full-time health and prorated leave benefits.

Illustrative Duties

  • Provides nursing services to individuals and/or families in clinics, ambulatory care centers, offices, or community settings;
  • Administers medications and performs treatments;
  • Performs appropriate height, weight, and head circumference measurements;
  • Administers immunizations under the supervision of a licensed medical practitioner or registered professional nurse;
  • Solicits contraindications and medical history prior to each injection;
  • Performs necessary laboratory tests and/or specimen collections per agency protocol (e.g., venipuncture; finger, foot, and heel stick; blood pressure checks; and urine testing);
  • Records and reports testing and specimen collection findings;
  • Prepares lab specimens collected for shipment to other labs;
  • Maintains a neat clinic area, assuring supply room is properly stocked and organized and that equipment is cleaned, sterilized and maintained in good working order.


Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of practical nursing skills gained through an accredited practical nursing program;
  • Skill in performing technical nursing procedures (e.g., injections, venipuncture, blood pressure screening);
  • Ability to identify questionable test findings;
  • Ability to perform CPR or perform emergency treatment for life-threatening conditions;
  • Ability to elicit sufficient pertinent medical information from a client and record a medical history that is complete and accurate;
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with clients and staff members.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION: Graduation from an accredited Practical Nursing program; plus two years of experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • Possession of current license to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Commonwealth of Virginia or multistate.
  • CPR/First Aid required within 3 months of hire.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a Child Protective Services Registry check, and sanction screening to the satisfaction of the employer. A TB screening upon hire and annually thereafter.

This position is emergency/essential services personnel. (Required to report for duty during inclement weather and/or other emergencies).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • LPN experience in a behavioral health nursing setting providing services to adults and youth with mental health, substance use, and intellectual disabilities in a fast-paced and multi-culturally diverse medication clinic
  • Practical experience working in behavioral health and other health care settings.
  • Experience with service delivery to individuals with mental health, substance abuse, or developmental disabilities.
  • Bilingual a plus.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to physically organize, sort, store, deliver medications and administer injections; communicate with ethnically diverse consumers who have MH/MR/SA special needs; read and record medication orders; take vital signs; use key-board to enter data in electronic health record and utilize a computer. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
