IT Senior Network Engineer 
Position #: 126160
 

Provides network design, research, implementation, and escalation support to the optical/switched/routed layers of the MAX regional network and enhanced services. Functions include engineering and operations planning, design, costing, procuring, and implementation of current and next-generation infrastructures including hands-on maintenance and support for DWDM optical equipment, dark fiber, routers, switches and physical plant. Additionally, the position will involve architecture of the MAX ScienceDMZ facility and integrating forward looking technologies of the MAX research infrastructure into production offerings. This position also provides network design, guidance, and implementation assistance for the Internet’s “D” Root Server with 221 nodes in over 59 countries. The position requires national and international collaborations which includes travel.

Minimum qualifications

Education:
Bachelor of Science degree required, preferably in Telecommunications, Computer Science, Physics, Engineering or closely related field.

Experience:
At least 10-15 years experience supporting large high performance networks.
Experience in commercial or research/academic environments is desirable.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
-Deep understanding of core networking design and implementation over the WAN.
-Experience designing scalable networks that can sustain growth over time in both quantity of links and link capacity at speeds up to and including 100 Gbps.
-Experience operating and troubleshooting WAN circuits and IP routing/BGP networks.
-Experience with comparing different vendor products to analyze and select next generation platforms for
research and deployment.
-Experience in specifying and characterizing dark fiber characteristics for WAN links over DWDM.
-Experience in migrating production networks to new equipment with minimal disruption to services.
-Excellent verbal and written English skills to communicate on technical issues.
-IP routing protocols to include: OSPF, BGP4, multicast (PIM & SSM), MPLS (L2 and L3 VPNs).
-IPv4 and IPv6 experience.

Preferences

Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
-Equipment used: Juniper MX960 routers. DWDM optical equipment from Fujitsu. Optical test equipment from EXFO and Digital Lightwave. Fiber fusion splicer, fiber microscope, and light meter.
-Experience with -48VDC power systems
