The Department of Animal and Avian Sciences in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of Maryland, College Park is seeking to hire an Assistant Director (position #103132.) This is an Exempt, full-time, regular position.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Assistant Director provides direction and support for an undergraduate student services unit including advising, creating, planning, implementing and evaluating ANSC undergraduate programs and managing day-to-day operations of the academic programs unit. Duties include but are not limited to conduct advising for all first semester and non pre-vet students, coordinate all spring semester advising sessions and provide academic stamps for all students. Assign advisors, answer questions from both internal and external prospective students, process changes of major, and work with all students who require additional advising (including at risk and struggling students.) Work with faculty to provide clear expectations for students and build mentoring relationships. Manage all events and recruiting for multiple student events such as Maryland Day, Welcome Back, awards celebrations and attend all orientations for new students. Actively work with department faculty in creating, planning, implementing and evaluating ANSC undergraduate programs. Identify and nominate qualified students for scholarships and awards. Coordinate ANSC scholarship process. Collect learning outcomes assessments based upon outcomes determined by the department (and approved by the college). Plan and manage academic program unit budget, supervise Academic Programs Coordinator and Peer Mentor.

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor of Science required, degree in Animal Science highly desired. At least 5 years of experience providing student services support and advising in science curriculum in higher education setting. Experience creating course plans, understanding and implementing university policies. Experience in creating and delivering presentations for diverse audiences. Preference will be given to individuals with UMCP advising experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to interact effectively and professionally with internal and external stakeholders. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Skill in various computer software packages, such as word processing, spreadsheets, database, and presentation of programs, Internet, email software. Experience with student information systems and degree auditing programs. Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, and execute multiple and continuing projects with limited supervision. Ability to solve problems, find compromises and provide excellent customer service.
