The Assistant Director will be part of a dedicated writing team at Children's National Hospital Foundation, which raises philanthropic support for one of the nation's top pediatric institutions. This position will focus on donor stewardship, ensuring quality of content and timeliness in reporting. Responsibilities include production of impact reports, email newsletters, gift acknowledgement letters and social media content and support for development of recognition benefits and management of stewardship assets. The role requires strong research, editorial and storytelling skills, a commitment to accuracy and an understanding of pediatric medicine. The Assistant Director collaborates with gift officers, physicians, graphic designers and other colleagues to recognize how donor generosity improves children's health. This position reports to the Director of Editorial & Development Strategy in Marketing and Communications.


Minimum Education
Bachelor's Degree (Required)

Minimum Work Experience
4 years - Professional writing experience, with a background in development (fundraising and donor relations) or marketing communications (Required)

Required Skills/Knowledge
Writing; able to deliver clear, concise copy
Ability to understand and translate medical and scientific concepts
Attention to accuracy and detail
Interest in pediatric medicine
Knack for finding and telling compelling stories
Ability to collaborative effectively with diverse stakeholders
Ability to gather content, conceptualize a project, then develop and execute it successfully
Ability to juggle projects and meet deadlines
Versatility; able to communicate through a variety of platforms
Organizational and project management skills
Understanding of philanthropy's role to advance a non-profit organization's mission
Ability to use AP style

Functional Accountabilities

Planning and Organization
1. Be a proactive and collaborative member of the Editorial Team in Marketing and Communications
2. Research, write and produce communications that address donors' interest and impact to improve the health of our patients and families
3. Provide strategic and editorial support across the organization
4. Use the Foundation's project management system and other communications tools to plan, be accountable and produce timely work

Data Management & Tracking
1. Use systems in place at the Foundation to ensure accuracy of data and proper documentation

1. Collaborate with fellow team members and across the Foundation to produce work that advances the mission of Children's National
2. Share content and best practices to support and advance collective goals
3. Communicate with courtesy and respect

1. Speak up when team members appear to exhibit unsafe behavior or performance
2. Continuously validate and verify information needed for decision making or documentation
3. Stop in the face of uncertainty and take time to resolve the situation
4. Demonstrate accurate, clear and timely verbal and written communication
