The Community Dental Health Coordinator (CDHC)-a new and important role within the health care team - will based out of Children's National's community health center at THEARC and overseen by the Dental Health Department. The coordinator will provide oral health promotion and disease prevention and interact directly with populations who are at risk for dental disease and are unsure of how to access a dental program.

Qualifications

Minimum Education
High School Diploma or GED

Minimum Work Experience
5 years - Recommended experience in medical or dental health care (Required)

Required Skills/Knowledge
CDHC will know how to:
Coordinate care between the health care system and community-based organizations
Arrange transportation
Reduce dental anxiety/support access
Encourage patients to complete treatment
Enhance cultural competency
Educate the population about prevention
Navigate Medicaid or other dental systems of care
Enhance productivity and integration of oral health team
Increasing awareness among patients and families of the importance of oral health and how to become and stay healthy, through community outreach
Improve health outcomes by bringing at-risk patients, such as children with special needs and infants, to their clinics
Improve access to care by providing assistance with establishing primary dental providers for people in the community

Functional Accountabilities

New Knowledge, Innovations, and Improvements
1. CDHC will be recruited from the same types of communities in which they will serve, often the actual communities in which they grew up.
2. CDHC will mitigate cultural, language and other barriers that might otherwise reduce their effectiveness.

Leadership
1. The CDHC will be integrated in Ward 7 & 8 and will work with all children on DC Medicaid.
2. The CDHC will spend time meeting with teachers, local dentist and school nurses to understand the local resources and barrier that exist.
3. CDHC can address parents' concerns about behaviors that frequently accompany dental treatment, such as fear and anxiety.
4. CDHC can perform clinical preventive services, such as fluoride varnish application, and community-based outreach duties.
