The Section Chief will be responsible for creating an environment conducive to excellence in clinical care, in research, academic merit and overall well being of section members .

Responsibilities

General:
  • The Hem/ Onc Physician's actual clinical activity shall be a function of the VAMC Executive Committee of the Medical Staff clinical privileging process and the overall demand for emergency services.
  • Provides direct hands-on patient care for patients with Oncologic and Hematologic conditions. Assesses patients for acute illnesses and determine whether patients need to be admitted to the hospital or managed in the outpatient setting.
  • Provides clinical guidance over the phone , by secure messaging and though the mail. Ensures accurate documentation of medical assessments an observations.
Observations:
Supervising and Teaching -Hem/Onc fellow , medical residents and students .This will include teaching at affiliated Academic partners. May be required to oversee mid-level practitioners, such as nurse practitioners or physician assistants. Is expected to seek academic appointments with one or more our affiliates , and to participate in activities related to the appointment as deemed needed for professional development and for assistance in teaching .
  • Supervise, perform and teach any procedures within the approval scope for and Medical Hem/Onc
  • Participates in various Hem/Onc , Section and Medical Service conference's are required .
  • Participates in Quality Assurance activities.
  • Engages actively in Research by performing , supervising ,acquiring results , presenting and publish those data, in a manner consistent with VA research policies .
  • Involves oneself in the works of various hospital and affiliated medical school committees.
  • Is responsible for administrative work for the section.
  • Establishes inter-personal and intra-departmental relationships to enhance optimal patient care.
  • Demonstrates competent effective oral and written communication.
  • Provides appropriate patient /family member teaching and education; evaluates effectiveness and level of patient /family member understanding of teaching provider.
  • Utilizes the CPRS computer software/program for entering and signing of medical orders such as laboratory studies and radiological studies, etc.
  • Fulfills Medical Center/Medical Service continuing education requirements.
  • Maintains familiarity and compliance with hospital infection prevention policies and procedures, ensuring the use of antiseptic methods of all in clinic procedures.
  • Ensures a safe work environment and employee safe work habits .
Teaching Responsibilities :

The section provides structured training for Hem/Onc Fellows and elective rotations for Medicine residents and students from three area universities. The Georgetown University Lombardi Cancer allocates two fellows each month for Hem/Onc rotations. The fellows respond to Hem/Onc consults at the inpatient and outpatient setting, in addition to seeing patients in the continuity clinics Monday to Thursday. Staff Oncologist is expected to supervise the fellows in performing procedures,
chemotherapy dosing, and formulating diagnostic and treatment plans. In addition, the staff will mentor the fellows in the preparation of academic presentations during Journal Clubs and Hem/Onc Management Conference. The staff will also supervise Medicine residents and medical students during their 2-4 week elective rotations. The Staff may also be invited to give lectures for the core curriculum needs of the medicine residency program of the hospital, and the residency/fellowship programs of area hospitals and university affiliates. The staff will provide feedback and evaluation of the trainee's performance to the universities. The staff is also expected to request academic appointment from university affiliates (GWU, GTU, and USUHS).


Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm- management has the right to adjust as needed due to agency needs

Clinical Responsibilities :
Each patient will have a designated primary Oncologist. He/she will be responsible for all aspects of care from chemotherapy administration to long term follow-up in the clinic. The staff will supervise the care provided by PAs, students, residents, and fellows who may be directly seeing a patient. The staff is expected to attend all weekly or monthly Tumor Boards, since key treatment decision making is usually conducted during multidisciplinary meetings. Regular tumor boards are usually organ specific (skin, breast, thoracic, hepatoma, etc). The staff will indicate to the TB the name of the patients that need to be discussed during these sessions. The staff is responsible for the timely response to consultation requests originating from the inpatient service or the clinics. Consult rotations are assigned on a monthly basis, and clinic sessions average 2-3 clinics a week.
Staff will also be responsible for the daily or weekly chemotherapy needs of his/her assigned patient and will also be working closely with the Hem/Onc pharmacists and chemotherapy nurses for the safe and efficient delivery of drug infusions. The staff will engage Palliative Care Section whenever appropriate for selected patients. The staff is expected to attend regular CME conferences available in the hospital and affiliated institutions, in order to enhance state of the art cancer care for veterans.

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
a. Licensure and Registration
Physicians (Except Residents): Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. The Hem/Onc Physician must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
English Language Proficiency. Hem/Onc Physicians, including residents, appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d).

Degree of doctor of medicine or equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
(1) Schools of medicine holding regular institutional membership in the Association American Medical Colleges for the year in which the degree was granted.
(2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
(3) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia as

b. Board Certifications
Board certification in Internal Medicine
Board certification/eligibility in Medical Hematology /Oncology

Research : Staff is expected to participate in the area of his or her interest. Mentorship and institutional support will be provided.

Referrals and Consults: The provider shall make referrals to subspecialists when their expertise is needed for diagnoses, the Veterans Health Information and Technology Architecture (VistA) to access information in the Medical Center Computer System. referral or consult.

Supervisory Controls : Ultimate supervision will be provided by the Chiefs of Medical , and the Chief of Staff

COMPUTER SECURITY:
Protects printed and electronic files containing sensitive data in accordance with the provisions of the Privacy Act of 1974 and other applicable laws, Federal regulations, VA statutes and policy, and VHA policy. Protects the data from unauthorized release or from loss, alteration, or unauthorized deletion. Follows applicable regulations and instructions regarding access to computerized files, release of access codes, etc. Uses word processing software to execute several office automation functions such as storing and retrieving electronic documents and files; activating printers; inserting and deleting text, formatting letters, reports, and memoranda; and transmitting and receiving e-mail.

Basic Requirements:

  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements: VA Directive and Handbook 5019, applicants must be able to perform the duties as a Physician. Light lifting (under 15lbs), light carrying (under 15lbs), use of fingers, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other, hearing (aid permitted), emotional stability, mental stability.
