The Accounting Manager performs detailed work similar to supervised staff assignments, as well as overseeing the work of the Accounting team. Maintains functional knowledge of transactional systems supplying general ledger summary entries and their related general ledger interface controls. Comprehends financial institution activity channel(s) and workflows. The Accounting Manager is expected to exercise sound judgment to plan and accomplish goals, assist with the design, monitoring, and reporting of internal control systems. In addition, the Accounting Manager is expected to apply generally accepted accounting principles, and abide by NCUA guidelines in conjunction with NIH FCU policies and procedures. The employee will collaborate with management, and contribute to cross-functional work groups to improve credit union operating efficiency and effectiveness. Provides support for regulatory exams; CPA financial statement audits; and support internal audit needs. Responsible for maintaining an environment conducive to associate achievement and satisfaction.MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESManage and coordinate the effective daily operation of all fundamental accounting functions to include, loan/share accounting, accounts payable processing, and month-end closing process in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles, and NCUA and other regulatory guidelines.Maintain appropriate systems, processes, records and controls for fixed assets, investments, and accruals (payroll, audit, Rewards, and operating expense). Establish, implement and maintain department policies, procedures and processes to assure compliance with all applicable local, state and federal laws, regulations and guidelines as well as generally accepted accounting principles and practices. Collaborate with the Controller to interpret financial statements for review by the Board of Directors, executive and line management, and various outside authorities.Interact with both internal auditors, and third party, external auditors and regulatory examiners to facilitate the completion of audits and reviews. Organize and coordinate assignments among department associates in preparation of audits by independent parties.Review team member general reconciliations for accuracy and ensures compliance with General Ledger Reconciliation Control and Review Policy. In team member absence, reconciles any general ledger accounts as necessary. Assigns and reviews all general ledger reconciliations. Ensures that reconciliation assignments maintain proper segregation of duties. Understanding of payroll system and performs bi-weekly review of employee payroll. Serves as the designated representative for the accounting department for cross-departmental projects. Communicates backs to the Controller and the team on the status and impacts of the project.Serves as the department liaison for the CORE Conversion to ensure that there is a smooth transition. Monitor changes to regulatory guidelines and ensure data processing systems, business processes and practices are in alignment with requirements, qualify as safe and sound business practices, and reflect organizational values.Communicate department goals and objectives to associates and report progress to management and associates regularly. Plan and manage the continual professional development of the Accounting Team. Deliver timely feedback regarding performance and provide guidance where necessary.Assess the adequacy of available resources and recommend solutions to improve the department's performance and value.Access Member or Associate personal and financial information only as required by the job. Maintain the confidentiality and security of all Member or Associate personal and financial.Ensure that work results and processes comply with relevant laws and with established NIHFCU policies, procedures, and practices, including, but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA).Report to the position supervisor, the AVP of Risk Management, Vice President, or to the any actual or suspected fraud or financial dishonesty or wrong-doing involving Member transactions, Associates, or NIHFCU.. Requirements: EDUCATION & EXPERIENCECandidate must have a minimum BS degree (or equivalent in the case of international candidates) in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration with seven (7) to ten (10) years of progressive accounting experience. Experience managing and overseeing day to day responsibilities of General Ledger Accounting Team strongly preferred.Experience in a financial institution strongly preferred. Demonstrated ability to work with associates, front line management, and senior management as well as external parties such as auditors/examiners and vendors.Perform at an advanced-level in MS Excel, MS Word, and MS Outlook and at an intermediate-level for additional proprietary applications.
