Summary

About the Position: This position is in Anatomic Pathology, Cytopathology. Work will be performed in Administrative and patient clinical office and anatomic laboratory areas Oversight and management of cytotechnologists and cytotechnician and associated services. Requires standing to perform tests, walking between areas of the hospital and laboratory, reaching and bending to obtain supplies and operate instruments. Proper protective gear and adherence to safety procedures are mandatory.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for supervising the cytology employees who prepare, screen, and diagnosis gynecologic and evaluate non-gynecologic cytology specimens according to current professional standards.
  • Arrange scheduling of employees, approve leave, and assure equitable distribution of workload.
  • Counsel section employees on performance and effect minor disciplinary actions, such as warnings and reprimands, recommending other action in more serious cases.
  • Serves as consultant cytotechnologist on difficult diagnostic cases.
  • Function as pathologist's assistant in fine needle aspiration (FNA) procedures and determine specimen adequacy on site of procedure. Decide appropriate triage of procured FNA specimens for further diagnostic studies, independent of physicians.
  • Train new employees and students in all tasks; instruct resident pathologists in diagnostic criteria for lesions.
  • Assure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations regarding cytology practices. Devise quality assurance plan and procedures.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 3 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.

  • One year supervisory probationary period may be required.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for Supervisory Cytotechnologist:

Degree: A bachelor's degree (or higher degree) with a major study (at least 24 semester hours) in an academic field related to the health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position, such as Cytology or Pathology.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes providing diagnosis on cytological specimens; training new employees; evaluating adequacy of specimens for testing; supporting quality assurance, quality control and regulatory compliance, and operating laboratory information systems (such as Composite Health Care System (CHCS). This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-11).
