Job Announcement

Enforces the Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code (VSFPC) by conducting inspections to include associated report preparation and confidentially sourced research. Investigates complaints, internal planning and external coordination, and issues notices of violation to responsible violators. Maintains required training, licenses and certifications and familiarity of local codes and ordinances as set forth in the VSFPC. Conducts approved physical and technically aided surveillance activities in furtherance of investigations and interviews. Identifies witnesses and gathers appropriate evidentiary materials in support of investigative efforts. Prepares cases for prosecution and testifies in court and at local hearings.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with a bachelor's degree in a field of study directly related to the industry being regulated such as engineering, architecture, urban planning, biological or environmental science, public administration, law enforcement, legal studies or a related field; plus two years of progressively more responsible complaint resolution and/or code enforcement experience in the industry being regulated.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector I/II issued by Virginia Department of Fire Programs
  • Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development, CORE Module.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • Driver's license (required)
  • Fire Inspector I/II (NFPA 1031) - Virginia Department of Fire Programs (Required within 12 months)
  • Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development Building Code Academy (CORE Module) (Required within 12 months)
  • Civilian Entry from the Virginia Department of Fire Programs or successful completion of Firefighter I and II (Required within 12 months)
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness from the Virginia Department of Fire Programs (Required within 12 months)
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driver's license check, and sanctions screening to the satisfaction of the employer.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb stairs and terrain features, drive motor vehicles and conduct observations for prolonged periods of time. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
