Summary

This position is a GS-0962-5/6 with a full performance level of GS-7 and is part of Retirement Services, Office of Personnel Management. If selected, you will be responsible for providing information and assistance to meet the needs of our customers including retirees, their survivors and representatives, and others who have an interest in the retirement and insurance benefit programs.

Responsibilities

  • Use retirement systems technology to answer and resolve customer inquiries received as written and/or electronic correspondence.
  • Administer requested adjustments to annuitant records and benefits affecting payments and entitlements as well as items such as address and bank account changes, marital status and name changes, and tax withholding.
  • Compute standard payment plans and/or authorizing special payment plans to assist customers in repaying debts due the Government.
  • Use automated or other systems, track cases and workloads assigned to the staff, monitoring location, current case status and assignment.
  • Respond to requests for general information about retirement and insurance benefits and expedites payments of survivor to include widows, children, and other beneficiaries as appropriate.

  • The incumbent will be required to perform on occasion the following: walking, standing and kneeling, lifting, carrying, pushing/moving carts and storing case files that may be on occasion heavy.


Qualifications

For the GS-05: Have at least one year of specialized experience which is equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the GS-4 level in the Federal service that includes work involved in explaining or answering questions about programs or products; assisting customers in completing forms or applications; reviewing forms and/or claims for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with regulations, knowledge of Microsoft Office programs and retrieving and scanning of documents;
OR
Successfully completed four years of post high school education;
OR
Have a combination of the experience described above and college education described above, which when combined are equivalent to 100% of the qualifications requirement.

For the GS-6: You must have at least one year of specialized experience which is equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the GS-5 level in the Federal service that includes using automated systems to assist customers with questions regarding programs, products, or claims or services; reviewing forms and applications to identify omissions or discrepancies; knowledge of Microsoft Office programs; and providing clerical or technical support in a medium size agency assisting customer with questions regarding benefits, loans, human resources, finance, accounting, payroll etc.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

You MUST provide transcripts or other documentation to support your educational claims. Unless otherwise stated: (1) official or unofficial transcripts are acceptable, or (2) you may submit a list with all of your courses, grades, semester, year, and credit for the course. PASS/FAIL COURSES: If more than 10 percent of your undergraduate course work (credit hours) was taken on a pass/fail basis, your claim of superior academic achievement must be based upon class standing or membership in an honor society.

GRADUATE EDUCATION: One academic year of graduate education is considered to be the number of credits hours that your graduate school has determined to represent one academic year of full-time study. Such study may have been performed on a full-time or part-time basis. If you cannot obtain your graduate school's definition of one year of graduate study, 18 semester hours (or 27 quarter hours) should be considered as satisfying the requirement for one year of full-time graduate study.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show that the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
