George Washington Birthplace National Monument is seeking an Administrative Support Assistant to provide administrative support for our two small parks, George Washington Birthplace National Monument in Colonial Beach, VA, and Thomas Stone National Historic Site in Port Tobacco, MD. This is a permanent full time position.

The GS-05 Administrative Support Assistant
  • Serves as the HR liaison to our Servicing Human Resources Office and prepares personnel actions and recruiting packages.
  • Serves as the timekeeper and prepares/validates time and attendance for park staff.
  • Serves as the personal property manager and conducts annual personal property inventory.
  • Serves as the mail coordinator, meters mail, sorts and distributes mail, and coordinates package pickups and deliveries.
  • Serves as the PIV activator and assists employees with PIV activations, updates, and pin resets.
  • Purchases goods and services with the government purchase card.
  • Completes miscellaneous clerical and technical tasks.
  • Organizes and maintains both electronic and paper filing systems.
  • Uses word processing software to develop correspondence, memos, forms, and other standardized documents.
  • Uses computers, electronic database systems, and other appropriate computer software.
  • Books vehicle and conference room reservations.
  • Performs IT troubleshooting and occasional basic IT support under the direction of an IT Specialist.

In addition to the aforementioned duties, the GS-06:
  • Performs advisory services and is regarded as an expert source of information on processing a variety of program transactions. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

George Washington Birthplace National Monument is located in Virginia's Northern Neck in Westmoreland County. The location is approximately 70 miles northeast of Richmond, Virginia; 35 miles east of Fredericksburg, Virginia; and 70 miles southeast of Washington, DC. Often referred to as Historyland, the area contains significant cultural resources. Natural resources are abundant, as well including a wide variety of wildlife and both the Potomac and Rappahannock rivers. The area is quiet and rural, with quaint towns along main thoroughfares and beautiful scenery in between. Public schools for areas in which the majority of employees reside include fully accredited Elementary and High Schools. There are small shopping centers located in the local area and major shopping, a university, and hospitalization is easily accessible within a 45 minute drive. Spring in the Northern Neck is green and beautiful, followed by humid summers, colorful falls, and relatively mild winters. The temperate climate, rich history, beautiful scenery and peaceful environment are why people love this area.

George Washington Birthplace National Monument , located south of Colonial Beach Virginia, encompasses 550 acres of the former Popes Creek Plantation, which was where George Washington was born and is the American ancestral home of the Washington Family. In addition to a working Colonial Revival farm, visitor center, several historic structures, curatorial facility and maintenance complex, the park also has picnic grounds and a public beach. Numerous recreational activities take place in the park including fishing, kayaking and horseback riding. Annual visitation to the Monument is 130,000.

Thomas Stone National Historic Site , located in LaPlata Maryland, encompasses 328 acres of Stone's plantation, Haberdeventure. Stone was one of the four Maryland signers of the declaration of Independence and is representative of a group of individuals whose choices led to the birth of our nation. In addition to Stone's mansion, the park has other historic buildings, a visitor center and a maintenance facility. Local area residents routinely use the park's walking trails. Annual visitation is 6,500.

SELECTIVE FACTOR: This position requires the skill of a qualified typist with the ability to consistently and accurately type at least 40 words per minute. Words per minute are based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. Applicants may meet this requirement by passing the appropriate performance test, presenting a certificate of proficiency, or by self-certifying their proficiency in the application package. GS-05 Grade Level
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: performing administrative functions (e.g., payroll, personnel, and/or correspondence), using office procedures and equipment, organizing and analyzing numerical information, typing correspondence, memos, reports, and forms from rough drafts, and notes, answering telephone calls, filing, and meeting and dealing effectively with others. You must include hours per week worked.
EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least four years of education above high school (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours) in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. You must include transcripts.
Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to 1 year of specialized experience. You must include transcripts.

GS-06 Grade Level
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: performing and providing a wide variety of administrative information and assistance on payroll, personnel and property management; maintaining and updating hard copy and electronic files, calendars, meeting notes, etc.; using various software programs to type or generate correspondence, memos, forms, reports, etc.; providing human resources support such as orientation for new employees, initiating personnel actions for accessions, terminations, awards, etc.; and clearly communicating and working effectively with others. You must include hours per week worked.
There is no substitution of education for the GS-06 Grade level.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
