Posting Title General Accounting Analyst Overview The General Accounting Analyst is the dedicated liaison between the Controller Office and University operational unit(s) responsible for the management and/or generation of financial activity. This role is responsible for recording and reconciling activity within the general ledger (balance sheet and income statement accounts), ensuring this activity is in line with the operational units systems and records, and producing financial reports and schedules to support key stakeholders. This role coordinates significantly with other accounting analysts within general accounting and assist in supplying information for required tax, audit, and compliance filings. Responsibilities Responsible for daily accounting and validation of financial activity including but not limited to those transactions from Student Financials, Institutional Advancement, Office of Conferences and Events, and all of the other various campus subsystems and external partners. Prepare standard reports on routine basis (daily/weekly/monthly/quarterly/annually) including reconciliations, variance analyses, etc. Perform necessary reconciliations of assigned financial activity and general ledger accounts on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. Maintain documentation in appropriate location that is accessible to all such as shared drive and financial systems. Inform others within General Accounting and/or key stakeholders of status and/or account activity to further the progress of the financial reporting cycle and/or facilitate issue resolution. Maintain working understanding of sources and uses of assigned financial activity and general ledger accounts along with their responsible University owner(s), corresponding transactional system(s), and appropriate accounting. Engage University owners to resolve any unusual items identified. Develop expectations, considering working knowledge of accounts and University business, and analyze financial transactions and balances of assigned general ledger accounts to ensure appropriate accounting (ie revenue recognition, deferral, prepayment, accrual, etc.). Develop and maintain relationships with business owners and stakeholders for designated areas such as standing meetings and monthly financial reporting packages that foster continuous improvement and monitoring of internal controls and facilitate transparency and connectivity between financial reporting and business operations. Coordinate with necessary stakeholder regarding operations that impact financial reporting and ensure proper linkage to general ledger for timely accounting. Proactively manage and resolve unidentified transactions and other temporary activities recorded within clearing and suspense accounts, ensuring items are properly identified and resolved within 30 days of transaction date. Organize and compile information required for tax and compliance filings. Aid in development and execution of processes and internal controls that safeguard University assets and facilitate accurate financial reporting. Make recommendations to University policy, as necessary. Work closely with management to prepare for external, internal and other compliance audits. Prepare audit schedules and address audit issues and questions that may arise Recommend accounting treatment, financial disclosures, policies and processes to supervisor(s) based on review and research of accounting principles, technical guidance, trainings, and interaction with others in the finance community All required and assigned work products should be completed timely in accordance with the General Accounting Monthly Closing Schedule. Qualifications Bachelor s Degree with a minimum of three(3) to four (4) years of accounting, financial reporting, or public accounting experience; Completion of Graduate Degree in Accounting and/or CPA Certification can be substituted for up to 2 years of professional work experience. Experience with non-profit or higher education is preferred Intermediate skills with Microsoft Excel and Word PeopleSoft general ledger and/or HCM experience is a plus
