Summary
The Law and Policy Section (LPS) assists the Assistant Attorney General on legal and policy questions within the subject matter of the Division's work. It handles the Division's response to legislative proposals and Congressional requests, the Division's comments on federal agency rulemakings, amicus participation in cases of importance to the U.S., Division involvement in international legal matters and other special projects.

Qualifications
To qualify for the GS-12 : You must have at least one year of specialized experience at, or equivalent to, the GS-11 Federal grade level. Specialized experience is experience gathering and analyzing information in response to an organization's program requirements; reviewing official documents for adherence to regulations and policies; and performing correspondence or similar document control for administrative programs.
To qualify for the GS-13 : You must have at least one year of specialized experience at, or equivalent to, the GS-12 Federal grade level. Specialized experience is experience gathering and analyzing information in response to an organization's program requirements; reviewing official documents for adherence to regulations and policies; and performing correspondence or similar document control for administrative programs related to legal, legislative, environmental, or similar subject matter e.g., congressional requests, citizen inquiries, freedom of information.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skill and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Time in Grade : Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements (one year at the next lower grade) by the closing date of announcement.

Responsibilities

The Program Specialist duties include, but are not limited to:
- Prepare, coordinate, monitor, review, and maintain control of congressional, controlled, citizen, and other correspondence.
- Establish and administer correspondence-related policies including coordination and review, style, format, etc.
- Develop proposed approaches to correspondence and prepare drafts of documents, including documents in novel issue areas for which there is no existing model or template.
- Assist with design, execution, and upkeep of the Division's Intranet and other information-sharing tools.
- Serve as the organizational expert in reviewing and interpreting new and established directives, instructions, and regulations to determine their impact on programs.
- Manage and coordinate administrative aspects of the Division's work under Interagency agreements.
- Coordinate the Division's reporting and data collection requirements, including writing and proofreading reports and other documents.
- Work directly with section management on special projects, such as crosscutting initiatives, writing and analysis projects, committees, and special events.
