Summary

This position is located in the Central Repair Branch of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The mission of the Facilities Maintenance Branch at the John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is to provide quality infrastructure repairs, preventive maintenance on interior and exterior architecture, and state of the art modernization that utilizes industry best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Carpentry - Performs construction, alteration, repair, or modification of items and structures such as framework, rafters, doors, finished paneling, windows, rough furniture, interior and exterior trim, staircases, trusses and beams.
  • Painting - Determines the method, techniques, devices and materials that are best suited to the surface finish required.
  • Equipment - Required to operate engineer or motor vehicle equipment such as a front-end loader, dump truck, etc., to accomplish work requirements.
  • Vehicle Operation - Operates equipment such as but not limited to: pick-up truck, dump truck, and skid steer.
  • Masonry - Maintains, repairs, alters and constructs exterior and interior surfaces and structures built of a variety of brick, block and stone.
  • Welding - Performs a variety of complete welding assignments using any manual electric arc/inert gas shielded, gas torch or similar welding processes to repair, modify or fabricate all types of metal and alloy parts, equipment or components.
  • Laboring - Shovels snow from sidewalks. Operates a variety of snow removal equipment and fixed and power attachments such as snow blowers, snow plows, Front end loaders and spreaders used in cleaning snow from roadways and large paved areas.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C .

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.

Minimum qualifications for trades and labor positions are determined by evaluation of job elements. You must meet at least 2 points on the screen-out element(s) and obtain an average of at least 2 points on all of the job elements in order to be considered qualified for this position.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Efforts and Working Conditions:
Incumbent must be in good physical condition. The incumbent works on ladders, scaffolding, and platforms where systems and equipment are located. Works in hard to reach places, stands, stoops, bends, kneels, climbs, and works in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently handles, lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 45 pounds in the performance of assigned duties. Occasionally lifts and carries items that weigh over 45 pounds with assistance.

May be exposed to all kind of weather extremes and temperatures. Works inside or outside; and subject to heat, cold, and inclement weather. Exposed to dirt, grease, noise, odor, smoke, and fumes. Frequently exposed to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, and electrical shock. Working conditions are considered in the evaluation of this job. Incumbent works on ladders, scaffolding and on 90 foot aerial lifts. The position is subject to noise and vibrators, gases, and fumes, dirt and dust from operating various power and hand tools and equipment. Incumbent may be required to work overtime with little or no prior notice.

Work Schedule:

This position requires a fixed work schedule; flexible work schedules will not be authorized.

The incumbent may be required to work a schedule that includes Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. He/she may also be required to work Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, and other shifts on an overtime basis with little or no prior notice.
