Summary

This position is located in Smithsonian Institution, National Air and Space Museum. The employee provides serves as a skilled member of the preservation and restoration team and works under the supervision of the Foreperson, Preservation and Restoration Unit.

Responsibilities

As a Museum Specialist (Aero), the incumbent would perform the following duties:
  • Preparing the large artifacts in the aeronautics and space history collection. The parts of a large artifact must be disassembled, often repaired, and reassembled, and in some cases, new parts must be designed and manufactured. Work includes but is not limited to the following types of artifacts: aircraft of all types, spacecraft, missiles, engines, propellers, communications and navigation instruments, electrical components, controls, and models.
  • Designs and constructs forms, jigs, cradles dollies, and slings, as needed to safely handle artifacts during the restoration process and in preparation for the movement of the artifacts.
  • Performs all types of specimen handling operations that require equipment such as forklifts, hoists, and small cranes.
    Maintains a clear, concise, and detailed written report of each restoration project, often with daily entries.
  • Takes photographs and videotapes of the restoration process for shop and technical files, working weekly with a professional photographer to record accurately all phases of the restoration.
  • Submits these written and photographic records at the completion of the project.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the IS/GS 07 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position Specialized experience is defined as assisting staff members and visiting researchers in obtaining information from specimens by cleaning, assembly, disassembly, photographing, or moving collections; packing, handling, moving, transporting, storing, and monitoring of artifacts that vary greatly in size and fragility; and assisting with tasks to maintain the condition of artifacts that are stored outdoors.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Or Education: 2 full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education or master's or equivalent graduate degree related to the position.

Or a Combination: Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic qualifications; for example, a half year of experience and a half year of education in the field may be qualifying.

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:
  • Knowledge of the assembly and operations of aircraft airframes and engines.
  • Knowledge of the use of hand and power tools, spray booth equipment, and cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to operate a forklift or similar material handling equipment.
  • Basic computer skills to include accessing information from the Internet and using software for word processing, spreadsheets and email.
