Responsibilities

  • Operates the chiller plant consisting of 3, 1200-ton centrifugal chillers,
  • Reads and interprets work orders, specifications, technical literature and blueprints for installations, modifications and trouble shooting
  • Monitors, evaluates, controls, and modifies station energy management system using Siemens "APOGEE" System,
  • Takes samples and make corrections to chemical content in three 1200-ton cooling towers,
  • Maintains, installs, hooks up, troubleshoots, repair, and puts into operation all types of refrigeration, air conditioning equipment,
  • Adds and removes multiple chillers based on medical center demands and needs
  • Has emergency responsibilities such as responding to all fire alarms, and reset fire panels, elevator failures, kitchen equipment failures,
  • Provides the Medical Center emergency repair capabilities during the night, weekends and holidays,
  • Performs other position related functions as needed to maintain safe and efficient plant operation.
Work Schedule: Sunday - Thursday, 11:00 PM - 7:00AM

This position includes a Selective Placement Factor (skill, knowledge, ability or other worker characteristic basic to - and essential for - satisfactory performance of the job). The Selective Placement Factor for this announcement is: Possession of a current Universal EPA Certification or card as required by 40-CFR Part 82, Subpart F under Section 608, in accordance with the 1990 Clean Air Act, for the purpose of recovering, reclaiming, and recycling refrigerants. Certificate must be from an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved agency. (NOTE: You MUST submit a copy of the certification with your application packet or you will not be considered.)

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Incumbent exerts considerable physical effort by walking, climbing stairs, and ladders. Carries objects of varying weights, sizes, and shapes. Incumbent must have good eyesight with or without corrective lenses and cannot be color blind.
Exposed to temperate extremes, drafts, and to stand, kneel and/or bend while working in dampness and water. Exposed to noise, vibration, gases, fumes, dust, grease, and soiling of clothing and skin surfaces which may require protective devices.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
