Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking a visionary leader to shape the future of our growing audio team.

The director of audio is responsible for the long-term strategy and daily operations of The Post's audio team, which includes more than a dozen journalists whose work reaches millions of listeners each month. The team produces " Post Reports ," our flagship daily podcast, and has created several other shows including " The Next Four Years ," " Presidential " and " Can He Do That? " The group has also developed acclaimed and high-impact narrative podcasts including " Canary: The Washington Post Investigates ." This director will also take a leadership role in experimental efforts, such as our AI-powered audio updates on the 2020 election.

The ideal candidate will have excellent news judgment and experience developing distinctive shows. Strong candidates will have a track record of innovation in audio storytelling, an excellent ear for sound design and sixth sense about what's next in audio formats. The ability to partner with editors, reporters, producers and audio engineers in the development of ideas while elevating the team's work through editing, coaching and collaboration is essential.

A willingness to experiment and think big about the future will be necessary for success. An entrepreneurial spirit and a deep understanding of the competitive landscape and business trends in the audio space is required. The director will be responsible for coordinating with the product, subscription and advertising teams as we seek opportunities to expand our audience for audio products and make them essential to more subscribers. Experience in the development and execution of third-party partnerships, whether utilizing new technology or developing exclusive storytelling, is a plus.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom. Once we resume normal operations, it will not be eligible for remote work.
