Responsibilities

As a Criminal Investigator for the Office of the Inspector General, you will serve under the direction of the Assistant Inspector General for Investigations. You will be responsible for performing such investigations and event inquiries to ensure the integrity of operations of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and Defense Nuclear Facilities Safety Board (DNFSB). You will be responsible for:

1) investigating of possible violations of criminal laws or regulations and other irregularities in the administration of NRC and DNFSB programs and activities.
2) supporting highly sensitive and highly complex investigative technical matters in legal, engineering or scientific areas.
3) serving as liaison with other key law enforcement and investigative personnel in other departments and agencies.
4) identifying, collecting, examining, and preserving evidence using controlled and documented analytical and investigative techniques.
5) analyzing and summarizing those investigations as they relate to the jurisdiction of the NRC by undertaking and documenting these investigations in accordance with professional standards.
6) handling, reviewing, accessing, and/or protecting classified, sensitive, or other information that, if not protected, could potentially cause exceptionally grave damage to national security.

SELECTIVE FACTOR:
OIG's responsibility for detecting and preventing fraud, waste, and abuse within NRC includes investigating allegations of misconduct by staff whose positions directly impact public health and safety; investigating allegations of failure by NRC management to ensure that health and safety matters are appropriately addressed; and investigating allegations of failure by NRC to appropriately transact nuclear regulation publicly.

Therefore, in addition to the minimum qualification requirements, candidates for this position must clearly demonstrate the ability to apply professional legal, engineering and/or scientific data concepts, theories, and practices to investigate allegations that directly impact NRC's ability to ensure adequate protection of public health and safety, promote the common defense and security, and protect the environment.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. In addition, Investigators must have experience conducting criminal investigations in one or more of the following areas:

•Internal Investigations
•Engineering
•Physical Science
•Technology
•Procurement Fraud

Specialized experience is experience and training that equipped you with the ability to conduct investigations and/or inspections of allegations to determine violations of laws, regulations, and/or procedures. Specialized experience also includes the ability to prepare concise and accurate reports of investigations, inspections, and/or allegations.

Candidates are subject to the maximum age of original entry into law enforcement positions with this agency, which is 37, unless they have previous service in a Federal civilian law enforcement position covered by special law enforcement retirement provisions or are a preference-eligible veteran.

If selected for this position, you will be required to carry and use a firearm. Maintaining firearm proficiency is mandatory.

You must also successfully complete a pre-employment medical evaluation.

Candidates must have already successfully completed the Criminal Investigator Training Program at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, Glynco, GA, as well as other courses as prescribed by the OIG to comply with the Council of Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency requirements, unless exempt or waived by the NRC OIG based on previous successful completion of such training. This technical training must be successfully completed according to the standards of the agency. Failure to do so will be grounds for mandatory removal from the position. Such failure will result in separation by appropriate procedures.

Education

There is no degree requirement for this position, however, a Bachelor's degree or higher is desired.

REQUIRED TRAINING
In addition, candidates for this position must have successfully completed the Criminal Investigator Training Program (CITP) at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, GA, as well as other courses as prescribed by the OIG to comply with the Council of Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency requirements, unless exempt or waived by the OIG based on previous successful completion of such training. This technical training must be successfully completed according to the standards of the agency. Failure to meet this requirement shall result in the disqualification of your application .
