Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse Educator (4C/D) is directly responsible and accountable to the Nurse Manager of Nursing Education as well as the Chief Nurse over Nursing Education. Incumbent is responsible and accountable for the provision of educational programs, orientation, training activities, and in-services for all nursing staff on their units. Provision of these educational offerings will provide a positive impact on direct patient care and for delivery of quality nursing care to a culturally diverse veteran patient population. Incumbent possesses the knowledge and skills to effectively apply all aspects of the nursing process within a collaborative, interdisciplinary team approach practice setting, which will then enable effective implementation of health promotion and prevention practices for patients, and attainment of optimal levels of functioning. Role responsibilities and accountabilities also include demonstration of the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age related needs of patients served in an assigned area of practice. This knowledge includes understanding changes associated with aging and principles of growth and development relevant to the adult and geriatric population.

The Nurse Educator collaborates with the Nurse Manager of their assigned area of practice to enhance/improve the overall staff education opportunities at this medical center. This may include, but not be limited to, review(s) of the Medical Center Mission, strategic planning, educational budget forecasting, educational resource allocation, operational planning, nursing affiliation and recruitment/retention activities, and policy/procedure development and revision. The incumbent will promote consultative interaction in the establishment and maintenance of expected nursing educational frameworks within all areas of this medical center, working collaboratively with nursing instructors. The incumbent is involved with provision of effective mechanisms for all nursing staff to actively prepare for, and participate in, accreditation and regulatory review processes and is actively involved in the Joint Commission and CARF accreditation compliance processes.

The Nurse Recruiter is an expert learning facilitator, a change agent, a mentor, a leader, a champion for Scientific Inquiry, and advocate for nursing professional development, and a partner for practice transitions. The learner and Nurse Educator interact to contribute to nursing professional development processes and the achievement of measurable outcomes that address the identified opportunity. The incumbent is a registered nurse who influences professional role competence and professional growth of learners in a variety of settings. The Nurse Educator supports lifelong learners in an inter-professional environment that facilitates continuous development and learning for the healthcare team.


Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm, Management reserves the right to determine and/or change the tour of duty.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 03/09/2021.
Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN ) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE ). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
Preferred Experience: Nursing Education and Oncology experience preferred

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

Physical Requirements: Includes lifting, prolonged standing, frequent bending, and stooping, walking, reaching, and repetitive motion. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing, keyboarding, reading, and logical thinking.

BLS/ACLS Requirements: Current certification in BLS is required for all staff providing direct patient care, and police. Additionally, current ACLS is required for patient care staff that work in specified or high risk areas (SICU/ICU/CCU/MICU/PACU/ED/and all procedure suites using moderate sedation, etc.). If you are selected for a position which requires BLS/ACLS certification, you will be required to have proof of certification prior to being boarded for appointment with VA. If selected, obtain such certification in order to avoid any delays in the hiring process.

Additional information

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time Nurses, and Nurse Anesthetists at the rate of 8 hours for each full biweekly pay period.
