Job Announcement

The Fairfax County Health Department is a progressive public health leader providing services that promote population health, protect public health and the environment, and ensure residents' equitable access to health services and information.

Under general supervision, this position safely and efficiently operates a county vehicle to and from client locations for the purpose of transporting and delivering laboratory specimens containing bloodborne pathogens, medical waste, supplies and patient medications to/from various locations. Sorts messenger envelopes, medical records, pharmacy supplies, bulk packages and equipment at the centralized distribution center and between daily scheduled delivery points. Makes daily pick-up and deliveries to all Fairfax County Health Department and external client sites according to scheduled times and established procedures following HIPAA and DEQ regulations. Performs operator preventive maintenance, servicing of assigned county vehicle and reports unsafe operating conditions. Communicates with co-workers, clients and laboratory staff regarding arrival times and emergency pick-ups to maintain laboratory workflow.

Note: This is a non-merit G-Status temporary position. Cannot exceed 900 hours per calendar year. Appointee is not eligible for benefits and does not earn paid leave or holiday pay.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of warehouse practices and procedures;
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle;
  • Strength and dexterity necessary to perform all required tasks including lifting, stooping, bending and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions;
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to high school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education, plus six months of experience equivalent to Material Management Assistant.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license.
  • Must be able to obtain Forklift Safety Training Certificate within six months of hire date.
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation - CPR (Required within 60 days)
  • AED (Required within 60 days)


NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a sanction screening, a child protective services and a driving records check to the satisfaction of the employer. May be required to provide copies of driving record periodically for verification of driving status. Tuberculosis Test.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Knowledge of and previous driving experience in the Northern Virginia Regional Area (NOVA).
  • Ability to follow established schedules and make adjustments to meet unanticipated changes.
  • Possesses good communication and people skills, detail oriented and safety conscious; ability to work in all kinds of weather while working out on your own with limited supervision.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Successful candidates must maintain a professional image and demeanor, and be reliable, flexible, and possess a clean driving record.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Job is generally sedentary in nature, and job requires walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, reaching, bending, and climbing stairs; uses hands to grasp, handle, or feel. Ability to lift moderate to heavy weight up to 50 lbs. Visual acuity is required to read data on a computer monitor; ability to operate keyboard driven equipment and computer. Ability to drive a motor vehicle. Position frequently communicates and must be able to exchange accurate information with others verbally and in writing. Ability to read road maps and determine alternate routes when required. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
