Summary

This position will support the Federal Government's response efforts to COVID-19. This position is for a Nurse Practitioner for the Emergency Medicine Service of the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Medical Center-Richmond, Virginia.

Responsibilities

• Handle all emergencies presented to the Emergency Room. Stabilize the patient, examine and diagnose the patient to determine seriousness of illness or trauma.
• Educate individuals of health-related conditions, recommend therapy and in the general promotion of health and the prevention of disease.
• Record patient-provider transactions in the problem oriented medical record format and completes data collection instruments, referrals and medical records as required. Record patient progress in health record.
• Participate in the quality assurance measures and program/guidelines for the Emergency Room. Monitor standard of care and quality of care.

This position will support efforts related to the COVID-19 veterans health administration emergency

Work Schedule: Full time (Temporary)
Tour of Duty: Varies and dependent on facility needs. Various tours. Need to be available for day, night, evening and weekend shifts.

Qualifications

Basic Required Qualifications (Per Handbook 5005) Nurse Practitioner

• U.S. Citizenship, Birth or Naturalized (appropriate documentation required)
• Master's degree from an NLN or CCNE accredited Nurse Practitioner program
• National Certification as a Nurse Practitioner
• Current, full, unrestricted license as a Registered Nurse
• State approval to practice as an NP

Must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 USC 7402(d), 7407(d). Preferred Qualifications

• Minimum of at least two years of successful practice as a Nurse Practitioner providing medical care to patients
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with other disciplines
• Demonstrated excellence in written/verbal communication and time management
• Demonstrated ability to use computer systems in support of patient care delivery
• At least one-year experience with Emergency Medicine Service

Preferred Level of Education Nurse Practitioner
MSN with Adult, Family or Primary NP or DNP

Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

• Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
• Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
• Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
• Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
• Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

Physical Requirements: Lifting/carrying - 45lbs or more; Standing; Sitting; Walking; Kneeling; Bending/Stooping; Twisting; Pushing/pulling, Both legs required; Simple grasping; Use of fingers, Both hands required; Fine manipulation (includes keyboarding); Reaching above shoulders; Near vision correctable at 13-16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, Far vision correction in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other eye; Ability to distinguish basic colors; Ability to distinguish shades of colors; Hearing whispered voice (with or without aid); Emotional/mental stability; Walking on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; Working with hands in water; Working closely with others; and Protracted or irregular hours of work.

Additional information

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time Nurses, and Nurse Anesthetists at the rate of 8 hours for each full biweekly pay period.
