Summary

This position serves as the Chief of the Office and is responsible for the management and staff supervision of the Office, reports to the Chief Operating Officer, and serves as a senior advisor to the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Executive Officer in the areas of patient safety, clinical quality improvement, and performance measurement programs, and patient safety event reporting and feedback. This position also serves as the Executive Secretary for the CC's Medical Executive Committee.

Responsibilities

  • Providing leadership and direction to the organizational patient safety strategy.
  • Creating the strategic direction for the Office and determining the necessary goals, objectives, and initiatives to achieve the strategic direction.
  • Managing significant resources allocated to the Office including identifying and justifying needs for additional resources.
  • Developing, evaluating, and adjusting organizational structures and management systems for the work managed.
  • Identifying institutional clinical care/patient care issues that require intervention; developing approaches to intervention and working to resolve problems and identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Forming cross-functional teams to address issues that relate to patient care, patient safety, and clinical quality.
  • Ensuring the collection and interpretation of data related to the Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Making recommendations regarding ways to improve both specific program activities and the overall organization and functions to stimulate and support the development of high quality in the national research endeavor.

Qualifications

You qualify at the GP-15 level, if you meet the following qualification requirements:

License:
Applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Basic Requirements:
Degree: Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy from a school in the United States or Canada approved by a recognized accrediting body in the year of the applicant's graduation. [A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school that provided education and medical knowledge substantially equivalent to accredited schools in the United States may be demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) (or a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed pre-medical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country).]

AND

Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. Graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada.

To Qualify at the GP-15 Grade Level:
In order to qualify at the GP-15 level, the applicant must possess 5 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled or equivalent experience and training.

Additional Qualifications:

You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GP-14 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: providing leadership and direction to subordinate staff; assessing, developing, implementing, and managing patient safety programs and services which are consistent with organizational goals, priorities, and practices; overseeing the development and implementation of more efficient and streamlined patient safety methods and procedures; managing quality control assessments and ensuring that necessary actions are taken based on the results of the assessments.

  • This position is designated as an "emergency essential" position and the selected candidate will be considered an "emergency essential" employee and will be required to be available, ready, willing, and able to report for duty under all circumstances (e.g., inclement weather, government closings and holidays, lapses in appropriations, non-emergency and emergency situations) for operation 24 hours a day and 365 days per year coverage.
