This position receives major work authorizations in the form of Shop Orders from the Plant Scheduler in the Job Order Coordination Group and reviews these orders to determine the type and magnitude of each job; Consults with the General Foreman, Shop Scheduler, or Division engineering personnel in resolving unforeseen complications, possible errors, unusual conditions, or desired changes; Visits job sites to determine work methods to be employed and prepares special instructions as necessary; Coordinates Construction Shop tasks with those of other shops and other jobs to determine the assignment of work to specific craftsmen; Responsible for inspection, progress review, and quality workmanship of all jobs; May work with customers to develop customer's idea into the design and layout of a finished job; Responsible for determining that material, equipment, and tools are on hand to perform preventative maintenance, special maintenance, and interdivision work requests.

This position specifically manages all aspects for the development, maintenance, and utilization of a work force capable of performing: 1) Maintenance to structural building components; 2) initial installation and remodeling work including metal partitions, framing, floors, laboratory benches and cabinets, shelving, blackboards, hardware, etc.; 3) cabinetmaking including furniture, special shipping cases for delicate instruments, display cases, and occasionally construction of scale models; 4) building of small structures using wood and corrugated metal; 5) repair of plaster and masonry walls; 6) provide spray painting in offices, laboratories, machine rooms, and other areas; 8) spray work "in the Paint Shop spray booth; 9) refinishing work on cabinets, doors, woodwork, chairs, desks, floors, etc.; 10) cutting, installation, and glazing of glass and transparent plastic; and 11) applying special finishes such as epoxy and other plastics.

This position continuously reviews the capabilities of the staff and assigns jobs to utilize the special abilities and broaden the skill levels of the staff to achieve a work force that is sufficiently flexible to meet the wide variety of work situations; Exercises final authority to employ and discipline shop employees and has responsibility for all administrative tasks including time and attendance records, leave approval, positions descriptions, performance appraisals, training, equipment maintenance, and maintenance of shop record; Attends Shop Foreman's meetings and ensures that the Construction Shop issues are considered in the Division efforts such as site outages and work requests; Responsible for promoting safe work methods and working conditions; investigates accidents and completes the necessary reports, makes inspections of work areas to correct potential hazards and ensure applicable housekeeping rules are being followed.

This position is subject to emergency "out of hours" call back to the NIST campus, and has the authority to recall Construction Shop personnel.

There is no specific length or level of experience requirements. The applicant's overall background of experience, education and training must clearly demonstrate the ability to perform maintenance mechanic supervisor duties without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUTS).
