Summary

This position is located in Smithsonian Institution, National Air and Space Museum. The employee provides oversight in managing the Family Programming, working with the appropriate museum teams to develop and deliver educational programming for all visitors, with an emphasis on family groups.

Responsibilities

As the Education Specialist, the incumbent would preform the following duties in the position:
  • Research and develop large-scale and other programming events, based on the collection and work of the Museum, for a variety of audiences, with a focus on family groups.
  • Work with the Museum team on showcasing appropriate program elements for audiences outside the Museum to maximize program reach and effectiveness.
  • Use a combination of content knowledge, research and understanding of educational best practices, to develop new/enhance existing larger-scale museum programming events, both independently and as program work team leader.
  • Manage all controlling administrative processes and paperwork for their programming, and the coordinate programming with the Special Events team and other Museum stakeholders.
  • Assist Education staff or contractor in the evaluation of programming, including assisting with the creation of surveys and other evaluation instruments, and their administration; the collection and analysis of survey data; and the creation of evaluation reports to be used to inform the modification of existing programming and the creation of new programming.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • Degree: that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position.
    or
  • Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described in A above.

  • AND

    Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-9 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position Specialized experience is defined as coordinating the implementation of that museum related programming, that includes budgeting, and leading other staff and volunteers to ensure program operation, assisting with the creation of appropriate marketing plans and promotional materials for the museum related programming; and creating educational programming for outside audiences with an emphasis on families.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

    Or Education: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree

    You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

    Your application will be evaluated first for the basic qualifications described above. The applications that meet the basic qualifications will be evaluated further against the following criteria:
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with scholars, scientists or other specialists in order to create effective programming
  • Ability to organize large-scale museum events that include robust and engaging digital programming through a variety of platforms.
  • Knowledge of education theory and teaching practices related to learning that takes place in museums or similar setting that includes the interpretation of historic or scientific topics
  • Ability to organize large-scale museum events, including working with internal and external event partners, managing staff and volunteers, managing controlling administrative processes, and budgeting.
  • Knowledge of evaluation methods used for museum educational programming.
