Learn more about this agency Responsibilities The Supervisor Police Officer serves as the Operations Officer and Police Site Manager for the Police Service at the Washington DC VA Medical Center. Duties of the Supervisory Police Officer include, but are not limited to: Performs a variety of management assignments for the Chief of Police or Deputy Chief of Police, as well as performing technical police and security functions at their assigned campuses Oversees the daily operation of the unit, ensures that agency policies and priorities are being followed: develops performance standards; and evaluates work performance of subordinates Serves as an expert advisor for their assigned campus and top management on Police Service related laws, regulations, functions. Security, policies and procedures. Serves, as the alternate on various boards, which ~ impact the management of their assigned site. Evaluates their assigned site security program based upon operating results, trend, statistics and problems; makes appropriate adjustments and recommendations for change Resolves major Issues between the Police Service and other services Performs administrative duties, with direct supervision of all subordinate police supervisors and midlevel supervision of all police officers assigned Makes continuing assignments, evaluates performance, adjusts workloads to meet emergent needs, recommends change In staffing levels, selects personnel, takes disciplinary or Incentive awards action, evaluates training needs of staff, provides training, promotes special emphasis programs, such as EEO and Safety Assists with the investigation of all crimes, both felonies and misdemeanors. Oversees the initial efforts of the reporting officer, preliminary investigations and assists when assigned All other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: 8:00am to 4:30 pm Monday thru Friday. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/16/2021. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-11 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-09. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-09 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Enforcing appropriate Federal, State, and local criminal codes in the protection of human life, public property, and the civil rights of all individuals, including the preservation of a peaceful environment; planning, directing, and supervising the work of subordinates; advising on procedures, standards, and responses to address law enforcement and security requirements; determining resource needs and allocating resources in response to patrol and security weaknesses; and following applicable regulations and instructions regarding documentation and investigations. You will be rated on the following Competencies for this position: Communication Leadership Public Safety and Security Security Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (eg, Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (eg, professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Routine patrol requires regular and recurring physical exertion, long hours of standing, walking, driving and similar activities. Responds to alarms, pursues suspects, participates in training activities, climbs stairs and walks during assigned foot patrols in and around the large buildings. Agility, dexterity and strength are needed to pursue, apprehend and detain uncooperative suspects. On a regular and recurring basis the work requires strenuous exertion physically restraining disorderly individuals to prevent harm to others or the individual. Police work is performed both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather. Supervisory Police Officers may work prolonged hours, especially during inclement weather or during a disaster situation. The incumbent is expected to maintain a high standard of physical fitness and hand and eye coordination in order to maintain his or her semi-annual qualification with his or her assigned firearm and annual qualification with his or her assigned police baton.
