Marketing Statement:

Incumbents in this position will attend a structured class and participate in an on the job training program. Trainees will assist in the installation, repair and maintenance of various railroad signals, switches, grade crossing, track circuits, and support equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Education
  • High School Diploma or GED and some verifiable technical/vocational training in Mechanical, Electrical, hydraulics or pneumatics

Upon the achievement of 1,000 hours at a particular grade level (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), an incumbent may be advanced to the next grade level provided he/she has taken and passed any required written or practical tests, acquired any required certifications and has met acceptable fitness for duty, work record and job performance requirements.

Experience
  • Minimum of one year of related work experience in the electrical, mechanical, hydraulics, pneumatics, or electronics field

Summary

The Maintenance Trainee, Rail participates in the WMATA Technical Skills Program (TSP) consisting of developmental training for a period of two (2) years in a designated mechanical discipline (High Voltage Power, Automatic Train Control (ATC), Communications or Automatic Fare Collection (AFC)). The trainee must satisfactorily progress thru each of four (4) training Levels consisting of both classroom and on the job training/experience as contemplated in the TSP.

Upon graduation the trainee will be placed into a job assignment as a Mechanic, grade C within the disciplined trained, performing the associated responsibilities under the close supervision of both management staff, as well as, TSP "Mentor" mechanics assigned to provide on the job training (OJT) in the respective mechanical Rail disciplines throughout the training period.

Job Levels : At each successive grade levels of this job (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA ), the incumbent is expected to demonstrate increased, distinguishing levels of proficiency and efficiency in knowledge, skills and abilities when performing the assigned duties and essential functions described in this job description

Essential Functions
  • Gains progressive familiarity with and develops skills in the maintenance, inspection, and repair of equipment within High Voltage Electrical, Automatic Train Control, Communications, or Automatic Fare Collection disciplines through the attendance, study and participation in both classroom instruction and OJT.
  • Works under the guidance of assigned journey level mechanics to repair and inspect WMATA's High Voltage Electrical, ATC, Communications and AFC equipment.
  • Uses appropriate hand tools, power tools and test equipment to inspect, diagnose and repair equipment malfunction
  • Performs all work activities in strict accordance with WMATA and industry safety and maintenance practices, procedures and standards and follows appropriate Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Metrorail Safety Rules and Practices Handbook (MSRPH) documentation.
  • Completes appropriate written and electronic documentation reports concerning the operation and maintenance of WMATA's High Voltage Electrical, ATC, Communications, and AFC equipment and the TSP
