Summary

The Judges Compensation and Retirement Division (JCRD) is responsible for managing the personnel, payroll, and retirement systems for retired justices of the United States Supreme Court, judges of the United States and their surviving spouses. The incumbent of this position serves as an HR Specialist for the Judges Retirement and Advisory Services (JRAS) team. This includes benefits and retirement processing and advisory services.

Responsibilities

Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Managing retirement cases for justices and judges of the United States;
  • Independently calculating pay and annuities for judges and survivors of justices and judges;
  • Providing counseling sessions and giving advice to justices and judges by phone and in-person on the Judicial Retirement System, the Civil Service Retirement System, the Federal Employees Retirement System, the Judicial Survivor's Annuities System, the Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) to include TSP catch-up contributions, the Federal Employees Health and Life Insurance Programs, the Judiciary's Flexible Benefits and Long-Term Care Programs, the Dental and Vision Programs and also Social Security and Medicare;
  • Preparing written communications to judges on pay, benefits, and retirement;
  • Preparing personal benefits profiles for judges attending various Judges Benefits and Retirement Programs and traveling to meet with judges and their spouses to review the profiles and discuss their pay, benefits and retirement, including Social Security and Medicare;
  • Conducting presentations on pay, benefits and retirement planning to judges and judges' spouses held throughout the country each year in conjunction with Circuit Judicial Conferences, Federal Judicial Center Orientations and Workshops, and Judges Retreats and Meetings;
  • Assisting with the process for the annual audits of the judges' retirement and survivor annuity funds to include preparing and validating the data and coordinating with other AO offices; and
  • Managing death cases for deceased justices, judges, and spouses.

  • All new AO employees must identify a financial institution for direct deposit of pay before appointment.
  • You will be required to serve a trial period if selected for a first-time appointment to the Federal government, transferring from another Federal agency, or serving as a first-time supervisor. Failure to successfully complete the trial period may result in termination of employment.
  • If appointed to a temporary position, management may have the discretion of converting the position to permanent depending upon funding and staffing allocation.
  • Relocation expenses may be provided, but only if authorized by the Director of the AO.


  • Qualifications

    Applicants must have demonstrated experience as listed below. This requirement is according to the AO Classification, Compensation, and Recruitment Systems which include interpretive guidance and reference to the OPM Operating Manual for Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions.

    Specialized Experience : Applicants must have one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience which is in or directly related to the work of this position. Specialized experience is demonstrated experience:
  • Calculating pay and annuities;
  • Providing counsel and advice on retirement and/or benefits related matters; and
  • Researching, developing, and preparing correspondence on pay, benefits and retirement to employees.
