Land Development Services (LDS) is the steward of the county's land development and building construction codes and regulations, and its staff members embrace their essential role as "first preventers." Every day, through careful review, permitting and inspection of site and building construction, our staff protects the health, safety, welfare, and environment for those who live in, work in, and visit Fairfax County. Our department also serves as the gateway to much of the county's economic development, reviewing over 16,500 building and site plans, issuing nearly 74,000 building permits, and conducting over 220,000 building and site inspections each year. Under the general supervision of the Technical Services Branch Manager, Building Division, administers/coordinates open and inactive permits to ensure that projects comply with the Uniform Statewide building Code (USBC) and are completed. Trains, supervises, and evaluates the performance of staff responsible for inspection requests, processing of residential use permits (RUP) requests and various certification and data entry. This includes researching and investigating permits that have been issued but not finalized. Coordinates staff activities in support of the Inspection Branch, which includes inspection requests and processing RUP, requests for inspections of buildings under construction. Oversees and processes the entry of engineering certifications submitted by professional engineers and contractors. Administers/coordinates building code complaint investigation/resolution activities between the Inspection Branch and the land disturbance and post occupancy branch of the Code Development and Compliance Division. Ensures permits are processed in compliance with USBC, Fairfax County Code and all other applicable codes.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to high school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education; plus, three years of engineering technical support work.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience in the application of the VA Uniform Statewide Building Code.
One or more years of practical experience in building code industry.
One or more years of experience In permit software such as FIDO.
Attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and work in a team environment.
Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (VDHCD) or ICC certification

CERTIFICATIONS AND/OR LICENSES:
Driver's license.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Position requires incumbent to be mobile with long periods of sedentary tasks. Ability to operate computer driven equipment. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee of this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.

This position is considered "emergency service personnel".
