Job Announcement

Under the supervision of the Engineer V of Fire Prevention Services, the Engineer IV manages, directs and evaluates the staff responsible for the evaluation of architectural, fire protection systems and other plans. Communicates development regulations to contractors, developers, builders, architects, engineers and contractors. Provides technical and engineering support on matters related to building and fire code requirements. Monitors workload and processes to optimize resources and adjusts as needed. Responsible for quality of work through training, mentoring and team building. Leverages new technologies to enhance the operation of the branch. May conduct plan review as needed.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM STANDARDS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

Graduation from a four-year college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technologies with a bachelor's degree in the appropriate engineering or architectural field; PLUS
Five years of progressively responsible professional experience in the appropriate engineering field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The ideal candidate will possess the following:
  • Certification as a “Fire Plans Examiner” from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development;
  • Certification as a Fire Inspector I/II (NFPA 1031) from the Virginia Department of Fire Programs;
  • Certification from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development Building Code Academy (CORE Module).
  • Certification as a “Fire Official” from the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development. Experience in fire protection design and/or plan review.
  • Experience in fire protection design and/or plan review.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (VDHCD) Building Code Academy (CORE Module) (Required within 12 months)
  • VDHCD Fire Protection Plans Examiner (Required within 12 months)
  • VDHCD Commercial Building Plans Examiner (Required within 18 months)
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driver's license check, sanctions screening and public safety background check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to lift up to 20 lbs.
  • Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from a computer.
  • All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
