Summary

This position is located in the Warehouse area of the Logistics Service in a Veteran Affairs Health Care System and supported catchment area. This position serves as a lead over a group of Material Handlers within a warehouse setting.

Responsibilities

  • Leads crew of Materials Handlers as a regular and recurring part of the job in order to accomplish assigned projects and daily operational functions.
  • Leads staff in the performance of Mailroom/Reproduction functions.
  • Assures all safety and housekeeping procedures are followed.
  • Ensures workers are briefed on instructions received from supervisors, and getting work started, by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the crew.
  • Maintains a current knowledge, and answers questions of other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives (for example, technical orders).
  • Checks work while in progress and when finished to see whether the supervisor's instructions on work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines have been met.
  • Spot checks work in progress to ensure chain of supervision's intent is being met and conforms to regulatory compliance.
  • Assists in developing plans for storage and arrangement of stock in accordance with VA regulations and requirements that determine the configuration setup, movement, rearrangement and traffic flow.
  • May require the driving of a vehicle, truck, or van not exceeding 26000 Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR), with electrical or hydraulic lift.
  • May coordinate incoming and outgoing shipments and placement of materials on the docking area which may require scheduling personnel to facilitate movement of materials in accordance with priorities, scheduling requirements and space allocations.
  • Maintains spreadsheets; works within responsible area to rotate stock, check for outdates, and maintain the appropriate safeguards and temperature controls.
  • Safely receives, stores and moves hazardous or toxic materials and substances such as certain types of chemicals or radioactive materials in accordance with facility and regulatory requirements.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work involves considerable walking, pushing, and pulling a variety of carts and materials handling equipment. Works offloading and loading trucks, lifting products on and off-shelves, handling boxes frequently weighing over 40 pounds. Will frequently handle equipment, furniture, and materials of an awkward and heavier nature in excess of 100 pounds. These items are typically handled using specialized equipment and/or assistance of coworkers. Required to work in storage buildings, pods, trailers, vehicles and warehouse that my be hot, cold, drafty, and poorly lighted. Will be required to work outdoors, on docks, making deliveries in all types of weather conditions during all seasons. Hazardous materials may be encounter in daily work activities. Duties subject to the possibility of trips, falls, scrapes, cuts, bruises, or injury from the use of equipment. All types of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) may be required.
