Summary

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is an independent federal agency that provides support to advance and disseminate knowledge in all of the disciplines of the humanities: history, literature, linguistics, archaeology, jurisprudence and the history, criticism and theory of the arts.

In support of the NEH mission, the NEH Pathways Internship Program provides paid opportunities for current students accepted for enrollment in qualifying educational programs.

Responsibilities

Pathways interns should assume that they will be participating in 100% telework.

Pathways Student Interns will perform some and/or all of the following duties in support of the various offices and divisions within the NEH:
  • Assists in day-to-day operations through performing a mixture of routine and sometimes complex tasks.
  • Performs a variety of program support functions, such as inputting, assigning, maintaining, monitoring, or updating work products and records as well as administering and performing other support activities.
  • Assists in developing material for briefings, reports, presentations and conferences for division/office staff and supervisors.
  • Assists in collecting, organizing and maintaining program and/or functional documentation and materials.
  • Prepares a variety of correspondence, memoranda, and information.
  • Participates in support of panel meetings, briefings, and other NEH events.
Potential 2021 participating Divisions
  • Accounting Office - plans, develops, coordinates, and directs accounting policies, programs, and operations required in support of the mission of the Endowment.
  • Office of Communications - promotes NEH grant programs and products by disseminating information and to highlight the importance of the humanities to our country's cultural advancement and in enriching the lives of its citizens.
  • Office of Congressional Affairs - serves as the Endowment's liaison with Members of Congress and their staffs in D.C., state, and district offices. Its mission is to articulate how federal funding appropriated through Congress to NEH impacts constituents in every state, Congressional district and territory of the United States of America.
  • Office of Grant Management - ensures uniform administration of grants and cooperative agreements throughout the agency, develops and implements related policy, and provides expertise in federal financial assistance management to complement the programmatic knowledge of NEH program staff.
  • Office of Publications - serves as the Endowment's gateway to the humanities network through its media products.

    Qualifications

    Demonstrated writing skills and basic computer skills are required. Must be self-directed, able to complete tasks in a timely manner, and attentive to detail.

    Applicants must be enrolled or formally accepted for enrollment as a full-time or half-time (Half-time basis is defined by the academic institution that the student is enrolled or accepted into) student at an accredited college or university in a qualifying degree-seeking program, or enrolled or formally accepted for enrollment in a qualifying certificate program.

    Students may be required to have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent) at time of application and maintain at least a 2.5 GPA throughout the entire Pathways Student Trainee Internship appointment to remain in the Program.

    FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.
