The Sustainability Manager is responsible for the comprehensive sustainability program at Children's National to support environmental stewardship. This includes partnering with virtually every discipline in the organization to operationalize sustainable product procurement, reduce waste and energy, and avoid exposure to toxic chemicals and pollution prevention. This management role aims to drive cost savings, improve environmental and human health in Children's facilities and the surrounding communities which it serves by promoting resource conservation and sustainable operations tactics and strategies. This position will be responsible for supporting goal-setting activities aligned with Children's Mission, Vision and Key Result Areas, tracking, benchmarking and coordinating environmental health programs between department and facility leaders and representing the organization's environmental initiatives with both internal and external stakeholders.

BS in Business, Environmental Science, Sustainability, Public Health or related (Required)

Minimum Work Experience
1 year - Leadership and management of sustainability operations in an organization (Required)

Required Skills/Knowledge
Knowledge of all applicable legal, regulatory, and policy requirements, including JCAHO, state, and federal and local regulations and guidelines (i.e. OSHA, HAZMAT , DOH, EPA).

  • Knowledge of sustainable and safe industry best practices, adoption of system-wide sustainable product and procurement, waste reduction initiatives, avoidance of chemical toxicity in operations and purchasing, reduced energy and water consumption and design, construction and operation of environmentally friendly, toxic-free acute and nonacute care spaces
  • Participates in annual environmental goals and metrics, and monitors and creates action plans related to goal progress at the system level and for each Children's facility. Researches, directs analysis of, reviews data and advises on long and short range sustainability goals and projects.
  • Reports compliance with sustainability goals and progress on other key initiatives and activities to Director, regularly.
  • Identifies environmental sustainability opportunities that will result in cost reductions such as energy, waste and water reductions. Reviews, revises, recommends and implements sustainable practices system-wide or as appropriate for each site within Children's Health Care.
  • Collaborates with Children's Foundation to develop grant applications and other funding opportunities.
  • Updates policies, procedures, and guidelines related to improving the organization's environmental footprint and subsequent human and community health impacts.
  • Responsible for gathering data, tracking, reporting and analysis of opportunities for improvement in
  • reducing Children's environmental impact and related cost savings
  • Provides sustainability expertise and consulting to Supply Chain Management, Infection Prevention, Clinical, Quality, Public Affairs and Marketing, Facilities, Food & Nutrition, Environmental Services, and other department colleagues on initiatives that require interdisciplinary and interdepartmental collaboration
  • Analyzes and assesses current operating procedures, materials, and methods; anticipates and implements changes or modifications based on sustainability goals. Performs life cycle assessments and cost analyses of proposed modifications.
  • Initiates and researches special studies and projects to enhance the long term viability of sustainability initiatives within different departments.
  • Creates and maintains quarterly system-wide Healthy Environment Dashboard on environmental health goals, trending and results
  • Collaborates on the creation and maintenance of a library of healthcare products and practices that meet sustainability guidelines including life cycle cost information and green building practices and products.
  • Creates implements and monitors effectiveness of new sustainability initiatives and support of environmental goal setting activities within Children's National Health System facilities.
  • Performs waste audits and opportunity assessments for other key initiatives and necessary monitoring related to use of regulated waste, water and energy usage
  • Provides technical expertise on current environmental stewardship, environmentally preferable purchasing and sustainability trends within the healthcare industry
  • Researches and stays abreast of changes within the specialized arena and provides cost benefit analyses for recommended changes
  • Oversees implementation of system wide leader and associate engagement, education and recognition initiatives to increase awareness and sustain a culture of conservation of resources and

  • Establishes means of communicating best practices throughout the system through reports, meetings, presentations, educational events, and website.
  • Coordinates on-going communication of sustainability initiatives and progress to goals within Children's Health Care system, including leadership and staff meetings, continuing education and other departmental initiatives.
  • Provides onsite education and training on recycling and waste mitigation opportunities, and other sustainability topics as needed.
  • Influences behavior changes using recognition tools as appropriate to acknowledge and encourage healthy and sustainable behaviors demonstrated by associates
  • Responsible for exploring and cultivating innovative and strategic partnerships and operational opportunities which strengthen and enhance Children's mission to care for the earth and the health of the communities it serves
  • Performs research of new technology, products, and services that can improve sustainability practices within the organization and greater health care sector.
  • Explores, develops and implements opportunities for innovative community partnerships and operations improvement which reap cost savings and/or reduce impact on environmental and human health
  • Participates in external sustainability councils and groups throughout the health care sector to promote the growth, advocacy and sharing of sustainable operations best practices


Functional Accountabilities

Strategic Planning
1. Contribute to the strategic plan for department services, include short-term and long-term objectives.
2. Collect and analyze customer feedback and evaluates service/department effectiveness.
3. Program Administration
4. Implement strategic plan through management of day-to-day operations of department, division or service area.
5. Collaborate with upper management to evaluate current as well as new program initiatives for effectiveness, feasibility and cost.
6. Ensure compliance with organizational and departmental policies and procedures, and regulatory standards.
7. Proficient to compile and analyze data to support upper management decision-making.
8. Operations
9. Oversee the training, education, scheduling of personnel, duties and scope of services for the areas of responsibility.
10. Operate and manage under the guidelines of the Hospital's policies and procedures and is versed in State Regulatory Compliance, i.e. Joint Commission, DOH, OSHA and EP A Waste Handling.
11. Perform QA/QI Inspections per departmental guidelines; collect and analyze customer feedback and evaluate service/department effectiveness.
12. Perform bi-weekly or monthly documented scheduled rounds in Areas of Responsibility.
13. Ensure Safety Guidelines are being followed and inspected routinely via departmental guidelines.
14. Responsible for a Daily Managers Report to be submitted to Director prior to shifts end.
