This is an entry level Docket Clerk position in the U.S. Tax Court's Docket Section, Case Services Division, Office of the Clerk of the Court.

Responsibilities

The job involves performing specialized docket work independently or as a member of a team. Docket Clerks are responsible for docketing, maintaining, and processing case information, and managing the progression of cases to final disposition in accordance with Court procedures and rules. Docket Clerks must be able to ensure that documents such as motions, minutes, stipulations, depositions, briefs, orders and decisions conform with the Court's rules in terms of timeliness, format, etc. The following duties describe more specifically the details of the position.
  • Receive, examine and review electronic and paper documents such as motions, minutes, stipulations, depositions, briefs, orders, and decisions and carefully review them to ensure conformity with the Court's Rules in terms of timeliness, format etc.
  • Sort, classify, and scan appropriate paper case filings into the Court's electronic case management system, DAWSON. Record case filings on the official docket record.
  • Route documents electronically to the appropriate Judge or staff attorney for action through the Court's case management system, DAWSON.
  • Process orders, opinions, and other Court documents as instructed by the Docket Section Supervisor, Judge or attorney.
  • Calculate the determination and redetermination of monies and input data in the Court's case management system, DAWSON.
  • Provide non-legal procedural information as to the status of cases in-person, by telephone, or by correspondence.
  • Receive and handle appeal bonds and notices for appellate review of Court decisions.
  • Work independently with an assigned senior lead docket clerk who partners and reviews incumbent's work.
  • Perform other work as assigned.

A. Demonstrated knowledge of Court Rules of Practice and Procedure or the provisions of the Internal Revenue Code as they pertain to Court Operations.
B. Ability to communicate professionally and with tact both orally and in writing.
C. Knowledge of legal terminology.
D. Demonstrated experience managing multiple tasks, meeting deadlines, and providing excellent customer service.
E. Excellent organization and time management skills and strong attention to detail.

Work at the higher grades: This position provides a progressive career ladder with full- performance level to the GS-10. In order to progress through the career ladder, an employee must work at least 52 weeks at the next lower grade, must be performing their current position at a fully-successful level, and must show evidence of performing duties at the next higher grade level. Promotion consideration is subject to the supervisor's discretion.

Education

No educational requirement. This is not an entry level law clerk position and a law degree is not required nor preferred to hold this position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EVALUATION CRITERIA:

Candidates must possess specialized experience which experience directly relates to the position to be filled and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position as described in this vacancy announcement.

Application of Preference Eligibles: Preference eligibles will be placed above non-preference eligibles within each rating category. Preference eligibles who meet the eligibility and qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent are listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 level or higher.
