Responsibilities

You will:
  • Interpret and summarize epidemiological literature as it relates to chemical exposure and disease;
  • Assist risk assessors and risk managers in interpreting epidemiological findings to place them in appropriate risk and regulatory contexts;
  • Evaluate and critique biostatistical and epidemiological studies appearing in literature, or submitted to the Agency in support of the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA);
  • Interpret data associated with residential and occupational chemical exposure incidents to evaluate subsequent risk mitigation decisions on use and use practices;
  • Prepare technical and non-technical reports for internal and external audiences, relating epidemiological results and findings to the mission of the Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics (OPPT).

You will spend less than 25% of your work time on contracts, grants/cooperative agreements, and/or interagency agreements.

This position is designated as Moderate Risk and requires a background investigation. Unless an appropriate background investigation is already on record with the Office of Personnel Management, you must undergo a background investigation. All conditions of the pre-employment security process must be met before an official letter of employment can be issued with a report for duty date.

If you are selected, you may be required to complete a one-year probationary period.

If you are selected, you will be required to complete a Confidential Financial Disclosure form within 30 days of your first day of employment and annually thereafter.

Qualifications

In addition to the educational requirements, we are looking for at least one year of specialized experience related to this position as described below:

To qualify for the GS-12 level, you need to have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-11 level defined as assisting in the development of scientific studies related to human exposure to chemicals; providing technical expertise or advice to others; and communicating research results.

To qualify for the GS-13 level, you need to have at least one year of full-time experience equivalent to the GS-12 level defined as independently conducting the review and analysis of epidemiological data or designing studies that measure the health effects of chemical exposure in human populations; providing technical expertise or advice to others; and communicating research results.

Your answers to the online assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas: 1) Knowledge related to the principles, theories, and practices of epidemiological studies; 2) Knowledge of health impacts of environmental or occupational chemical exposures; 3) Ability to synthesize data to develop risk assessments; 4) Ability to participate in multidisciplinary study teams; 5) Skill in conducting statistical analysis of epidemiological data; 6) Skill in managing, collecting, and analyzing epidemiological and/or human health exposure data; 7) Skill in written communication; 8) Skill in oral communication.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

You need a degree or combination of education and experience as described below to qualify for this position.

You must have a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in the following: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences related to the work of this position.
