This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan reimbursement program. To participate in the program, you must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA Policy 1021 and submit your application within four months of appointment. Responsibilities

The Department of Veterans Affairs, Baltimore VA Medical Center is currently seeking a full-time BC/BE Anesthesiologist to join an expanding clinical, education and research facility. Applicants with sub specialty experience in vascular, neurosurgical, ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia and acute pain management are particularly encouraged to apply, however qualified generalists are also sought. Our facility is the major tertiary care referral center for the VA Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS) and offers a full range of inpatient, outpatient and primary care services for veterans living in Maryland and adjacent states. Located on the campus of the University of Maryland and connected to the University of Maryland Medical Center with a sky bridge, the VAMHCS maintains a close affiliate with the University of Maryland School of Medicine (SOM). Our Department of Anesthesiology provides perioperative, critical care and pain management services to a diverse and complex population of veterans. Surgical specialties include general, orthopedic, neurosurgical, thoracic, vascular, urologic, ENT, plastic and reconstructive, podiatric and gynecologic (no cardiac or trauma). Expansion of anesthesia clinical services and programs necessitates the recruitment of energetic and dedicated individuals to join our team. Responsibilities will include perioperative patient care in the general operating rooms and remote locations; providing inpatient and outpatient consultation; didactic and clinical instruction to residents, medical students and allied health trainees; supervision of CRNAs and other professionals; and participating in the development and implementation of program planning, objectives, policies and standards essential to delivery of quality anesthetic care. Administrative, clinical research and leadership opportunities are available. Participation in the academic missions of the SOM is encouraged. Faculty appointment in the SOM will be commensurate with academic credentials. The selectee(s) will also perform all other duties as assigned, pertaining to this occupation, to meet the needs of the Agency, Department, Facility, and/or Service.

Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday; 7:30AM to 4:00PM; with evening, night, weekend and holiday call shared with other staff Anesthesiologists.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
1) Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or

2) Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.

3) For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.

NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. § 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
    (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are:
(1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME),
OR
2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),
OR
(3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

PHYSICIAN STAFF REQUIREMENTS.

Staff Physician. None beyond the basic requirements. The individual must qualify to perform duties as a physician, have completed an accredited residency and/or possess experience which has qualified the individual to perform general duties and some specialized functions and procedures without supervision. Staff physicians may also include attendings who train physician residents assigned in facilities with residency training programs, and consultants who are capable of giving authoritative views and opinions on subjects in their field of medicine.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical Requirements: Must have the mental and physical ability to satisfactorily perform the duties of the proposed assignment and pass the requisite laboratory and other screening as required by Federal regulatory agencies. Lifting up to 25 lbs (equipment/ patient manipulation), Standing and/ or sitting for long periods is possible.
