Research at Children's National is conducted through the Children's National Research Institute (CNRI), the academic arm of Children's National. Reporting to the Vice President of Research Administration, the Digital Communications Lead will work with internal clients to develop comprehensive communication plans and high-quality communications content for a variety of research and innovation initiatives including external websites, the intranet, reports and events. The individual will work with Public Relations & Marketing team to develop, write, and edit materials for the web and intranet, social media, and assists in developing and executing digital strategy that optimizes usage of online tools. This will include keeping projects/milestones on schedule by working with various departments, and leading QA work for projects. The Communication Lead will assist in assembling project teams, identify appropriate resources needed, help develop and execute project plans, assign individual responsibilities, manage vendors, set deadlines as well as monitor and summarize project progress reports. The position will also support content management, and assist in the planning of user testing projects. In addition the individual will support the execution of large events, conferences, webinars and any other events hosted by the Research Institute's leadership team. In collaboration with Marketing & Communications the individual will be the point person on digital signage content and updates to templates and signs when the Children's National Research Institute building opens in in 2021 at the Children's National Research and Innovation Building. The position is equally focused on maintaining and building and requires the use of creative thinking to identify new approaches to solving problems.

Qualifications

Minimum Education
Bachelor's Degree rreferably in Communications, journalism, web development, or related field. Strong analytical abilities and web-related project management. (Required)

Minimum Work Experience
3 years of website support experience and progressively responsible experience in health or science communications preferably in an university or academic medical center setting. (Required)

Required Skills/Knowledge
  • Exceptional project management and organizational skills with the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and change course as required.
  • Ability to work within and across teams.
  • Experience in executing effective internal and external communications strategies.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office and SharePoint.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign).
  • Experience in web design and web content production.
  • Ability to work autonomously, make decisions as needed, problem solve, and strategize with leadership.
  • Understands the organization and scientific research and is able to consistently work toward individual and department goals.

Functional Accountabilities

Responsible Conduct of Research
1. Consistently demonstrate adherence with the standards for the responsible conduct of research.
2. Responsible for appropriate use of research funds and resources.
3. Comply with all annual job-related training requirements.

Content Management System Support
1. In collaboration with the Public Relations & Marketing team, work efficiently within the content management system to make updates to templates, create new pages, assign taxonomy, and edit images for research-related content.
2. Build relationships with key stakeholders, develop and maintain strong working relationships to ensure digital channels are updated frequently and accurately.
3. Coordinate with all levels of Research & Innovation to help ensure the accuracy and quality of online content.
4. Act as point of contact for researchers interested in sharing their work online.
5. Train content contributors on usage of Children's National content management system for editing research content such as Center or Lab pages. Ensure that content aligns with website visitor needs.
6. Work efficiently within the content management system - make updates to templates, create new pages, assign taxonomy , edit and images.
7. Can train others on how best to accomplish tasks and get desired results on the website.
8. Work in collaboration with Public Relations & Marketing and with other members of the leadership team to ensure research content is accurate, adheres to Children's National styles and standards, ands supports overall communications goals and objectives.
9. Works with analytics to evaluate digital content effectiveness and make recommendations for improvements. Report on performance to research and web leadership.

Communication and Event Management
1. Writes and edits communications materials personally, or in collaboration with project staff and leadership.
2. Works with digital team members to develop, write, and edit materials for the web and social media, and assists in developing and executing digital strategy that optimizes usage of online tools.
3. Draft and/or generate routine communications; coordinate production (formatting, copying, etc.) and dissemination of documents, such as presentations, course handouts, grant proposals, conference and seminar materials, reports, brochures, and displays.
4. Design/format and create promotional materials, occasionally working with external professionals for this.
5. Regularly produce digital newsletters, invitations and social media posts.
6. Collaborate with the Executive Leadership team and Public Relations & Marketing on reports and external communications.
7. Liaison with external graphic and printing companies
8. Identify stories about the center, faculty, staff, and students and produce written materials for electronic print, web, and video in collaboration with the Public Relations & Marketing team.
9. Coordinate duties associated with scheduling, organizing, and operating institute conferences, seminars, and events, including recommending vendors for services.

Project Management
1. Create and maintain project estimates and schedules.
2. Assist in the creation of project plans, write and maintain project status reports, meeting recaps and agendas.
3. Lead, perform and maintain testing using testing tools on various browsers and work with developers to complete work using best practices.
4. Facilitate communication between internal project team members, project teams, clients and vendors.
