Principal Associate, Data Science

As a Data Scientist on Capital One's People Analytics team, you'll be on the leading edge of applying analytics to talent, combining machine learning and social science to build strategies that expand Capital One's talent advantage.

Role Description

Lead data scientist for the People Analytics team that supports the Technology organization. Responsible for designing and delivering models, as well as research and analysis in support of the Technology organization's talent agenda, which includes a wide range of topics such as:
  • Bringing in, developing, and retaining top talent
  • Building a high performing, highly diverse executive pipeline
  • Maximizing productivity
  • Rethinking how we measure talent


In this role, you will:

Leverage structured problem solving approaches and data science skills to identify and deliver high impact solutions
  • We work on a high priority agenda for the CIO with semi regular reviews, and have regular check-ins with VP and MVP level customers
  • Recent focuses include: improving diversity in executive ranks, measuring and improving productivity of tech workers and teams, modeling attrition trends & drivers to predict how many people to hire at what levels and locations, and understanding which training programs best impact which associates


Develop unique data science skills and human-capital expertise
  • Human capital problems require particular attention to sample size impacts, covariance, selection bias, modeling choices, and other issues that can decide between highly meaningful & impactful results, and white noise

  • Statistically-minded: You've built models, validated them, and backtested them. You know how to interpret a confusion matrix or a ROC curve. You have experience with clustering, classification, sentiment analysis, time series, and other quantitative methods


Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree plus 5 years of experience in data analytics, or Master's Degree plus 3 years in data analytics, or PhD
  • At least 1 year of experience in open source programming languages for large scale data analysis
  • At least 1 year of experience with machine learning
  • At least 1 year of experience with relational databases


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in "STEM" field (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) plus 3 years of experience in data analytics, or PhD in "STEM" field (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics)
  • At least 1 year of experience working with statistical methods: familiarity with most of experiment design, times series forecasting methods, regression (GLM and mixed GLM), ANOVA, t-tests, gradient boosting models, survival models, cluster analyses, causal inferences, principal component analysis, and SARIMA
  • At least 1 year of experience working with AWS
  • At least 3 years' experience in Python, Scala, or R
