Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Project Management, Technical Management, Business Management or related field

  • Minimum five (5) years of relevant experience in project management, program management, or process improvement

  • Project Management Professional (PMP)

  • Master's degree in Business Administration, or Project Management
  • Prior experience in mass transit, aerospace, or transportation industries or a comparable relevant operational environment
  • Background or familiarity with the Safety profession is considered a plus

Job Summary/Duties:

The Safety Management System Project Manager (SMS) works closely with leaders from the Safety and Operations Departments, applying their expertise in Project Management (PM) to perform the tactical planning required to implement WMATA's SMS Strategic Roadmap. This Project Management Professional (PMP) will engage responsible owners and their subject matter experts to develop and implement detailed plans of action required to accomplish key milestones used to establish a robust, industry-leading SMS. This SMS Project Manager is accountable for developing specific action plans; integrating them into a master plan; establishing and managing the operating rhythm; tracking implementation progress against plan; measuring results with key performance indicators; problem solving facilitation; preparing intuitive status dashboards, and; reporting and presenting to senior and executive leadership on a regular basis. The incumbent must be experienced in coordinating and orchestrating a wide range of complex projects and commitments with a proven record of delivering results on time and within budget. Additionally, this position will require interacting with personnel from a variety of departments within WMATA.

  • Works with SMS strategic milestone owners to develop the plans of action required to meet success criteria and achieve results.
  • Capable of using tools such as Microsoft Project to develop action plans and integrate them into an overall SMS master plan.
  • Simplifies the complexed, by synthesizing data and information from a variety of sources to provide comprehensive status on SMS implementation progress at a glance.
  • Applies the managerial skills needed to adjust plans as lessons are learned and when circumstances require creative solutions to sustain progress while facing adversity.
  • Develops key performance indicators and metrics that measure the project's performance and enable informed decision making.
  • Manages a structured operating rhythm that establishes the cadence for an SMS project that drives ownership and accountability.
  • Has the verbal and writing skills necessary to prepare progress reports and present to executive and senior leadership on project status.
