The Washington Post is seeking a dynamic and self-motivated Tax Manager to collaborate with the Head of Tax in building a modern and forward-looking Tax Department.

The purchase of The Washington Post by Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos, has propelled the company into the elite set of US digital publishers. Along with the robust investment and record-breaking growth in digital revenue, traffic, and subscriptions comes the responsibility of accurately and timely complying with increasing tax reporting requirements. This is a great opportunity to expand your knowledge to different areas of tax. You will be collaborating with the Head of Tax on building and managing an effective tax operation on Federal, state and local, and international level. Specifically, the Tax Manager will be responsible for managing and facilitating the accurate preparation and filing of our company's US and foreign tax returns. The ideal candidate is a team player who manages the tax team to greater performance, creates and implements tax plans and works with the accounting and leadership teams to identify opportunities for process improvement and potential areas of risk. The Tax Manager will ensure compliance with US and international tax law through a series of systems and system controls that are designed to ensure accurate, timely reporting. They will monitor current and impending changes to tax regulation and make the appropriate updates to policies and strategies. The ideal candidate is focused in their pursuit of ensuring compliance and achieves this goal through optimizing reporting procedures and driving the successful function of the tax team.

  • You have no problem with changing priorities. As the business is changing, new tax research and compliance needs arise and require timely input from the Tax Department.
  • You have a proven track record of managing multiple simultaneous projects with changing priorities.
  • You have experience with helping your team reengineer their day-to-day processes to increase speed, efficiency, and effectiveness, to re-prioritize, and to re-allocate time and resources.
  • You look for opportunities to automate manual processes and drive overall process improvement.
  • You are obsessed with excellent customer service and can explain complex concepts to non-technical audiences. You are comfortable with asking questions and having conversations across the organization.
  • You are exceptionally organized and thorough, yet capable of moving quickly, managing several projects at the same time, and meeting deadlines. You take ownership of your projects.
  • You are excellent at written and oral communication skills and possess strong organizational and interpersonal skills.


Responsibilities:
  • Maintain compliance of all tax-related items including Federal income and excise tax returns, multi-state income and sales and use tax returns, local property and business license tax returns, and international tax returns (note: no FAS 109 income tax provision disclosure requirements). This includes both review and occasional preparation by the manager. Federal income and state compliance is prepared in-house with outsourced review; sales tax compliance and foreign direct compliance are outsourced with in-house review; use tax calculation is done in-house; foreign indirect compliance is done in-house.
  • Manage all ongoing projects, including recurring tax calendar items and ad hoc projects.
  • Look for opportunities to automate manual tax processes.
  • Oversee documentation of all processes and decisions with policies and carryforward notes.
  • Monitor tax news for items impacting Company's operations.
  • Manage use tax accrual process.
  • Respond to notices and inquiries for tax authorities.
  • Timely respond to inquiries from other business units.
  • Partner with Head of Tax for new initiatives.


Requirements:
  • 8+ years of Tax experience
  • Minimum 3 years as a manager or supervisory role
  • BA in Finance, Accounting or related field
  • Master's in Tax preferred
  • Active CPA license.
  • Advanced Excel skills, other automation tools knowledge preferred.
  • OneSource or GoSystem experience is a plus, but not required.
  • BNA Fixed Assets experience is a plus, but not required.
  • Natural curiosity to streamlining, automation, process improvement.
  • Demonstrated behaviors in problem-solving and team building.
  • Able to work in a start-up type environment with varying structure and changing priorities.
  • Strong interest in formalizing and documenting processes and decisions.
