Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking a Senior Product Designer to join its Product Design team. This team of UX, UI, and visual designers leads design strategy and visual approaches for The Post's suite of digital products, including washingtonpost.com, our native iOS, and Android apps, internal tools, and our paywall and account management experiences.

In this Product Design role, you'll focus on the UX, UI, and visual design of our Opinions journalism, creating systems and differentiating experiences to elevate our Opinions brand and sub-brands. Your work will span across our user-facing platforms on web, mobile, social, and native applications.

You'll be part of a team of more than a dozen designers. You'll collaborate with product managers and internal stakeholders across multiple teams to identify, ideate on and propose new approaches to our user experience.

Here's what you'll be working on:
  • Leading design strategy, ideation, and execution for our Opinions product systems
  • Designing and presenting mockups, wireframes, sitemaps, user flows, and prototypes that adhere to user-centered design principles to produce high-quality visuals, from concept to execution
  • Working with other designers to establish style guides, standards, and design systems
  • Partnering with engineering, editors, and product leadership to ideate and create new and innovative features and capabilities in our user-facing products and Opinions experiences
  • Work on the entire lifecycle of the product: research, user flows, prototyping, high fidelity comps, and collaboration with product managers and engineers on implementation
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in our products and process by leveraging your design experiences, best practices, and user insights to recommend solutions

This ideal candidate for this role:
  • Wants to be hands-on with design and design strategy
  • Constantly looks for ways to improve the way our products look AND work
  • Loves to collaborate closely with colleagues in research, product management, and engineering
  • Is organized, driven, and excited about designing the news products of the future
  • Can clearly and passionately articulate the thinking behind a design
  • Is energized by problem-solving and loves to develop solutions for difficult problems
  • Enjoys gathering user and project requirements to create conceptual wireframes, prototypes, and final designs for user-facing and newsroom-facing products
  • Loves to design with a major focus on user interface, end-to-end user experience, and understanding user-driven needs

You have:
  • A portfolio that shows a strong body of work including outstanding visual and user interface designs
  • 4+ years of design experience on digital platforms
  • Extensive experience designing interactive applications, preferably editorial
  • An established track record of producing business results through design
  • Deep knowledge of research techniques including competitive analysis, user interviews, persona creation, and journey mapping
  • A collaborative spirit and a proven ability to work well with others, building strong partnerships across teams
  • Experience designing for web, mobile, and native applications
  • Comfort with design and prototyping software like Sketch, the Adobe Creative Suite, Invision, and Principle
  • Working knowledge of front-end development and best practices for design implementation
  • Strong presentation and writing skills
  • Experience with or strong interest in digital media and news

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.

The innovation doesn't end in the Newsroom - dozens of teams power The Washington Post. We are now hiring the next innovator - how will you Impact Tomorrow?
