Employment Opportunities - Summer 2021

Please read this entire announcement before submitting your application. This announcement is specific to the Gymnastics Camp Staff. If you are interested in other camp program areas, you must apply for that position as well.

Opportunities for temporary summer employment with the Arlington County Department of Parks & Recreation include work as summer Camp managers, and support staff (counselors) in camp programs throughout the County. Gymnastics Camp Counselors are needed to provide camp programs for the youth audience ages 6-9. Several positions are available, and hours vary.

Gymnastics Summer Camp runs from June 21 - August 20 (core camp dates). Staff must be able to commit to at least the first half (sessions 1- 5) or second half of camp (sessions 6-9). Training and planning begin mid to late May through June. These trainings include a combination of independent and self-paced online courses with virtual and in-person trainings during weekday evenings and a few Saturdays. All camp staff will be trained to follow current guidance (county specific protocols) related to Covid19 safety.

Gymnastics Camp Programs:

Gymnastics camp staff will instruct campers ages 6-9 years old in beginner-intermediate level gymnastics skills. Staff will also run games, physical fitness activities, crafts, and water day. Staff will supervise snack, special visits (if applicable), and outdoor games. Training to teach gymnastics skills will be provided but gymnastics background preferred.

Applications are being accepted for the following positions:

Responsible for assisting all leaders in the summer camp or program activities and operations. Applicants must be at least 16 years old to be hired for licensed preschool camp, all other camps require the applicant be at least 15 years old.
Minimum requirements: The Student Assistant I qualifications are non-high school graduates, who have worked one month at a summer camp OR with children (in any capacity) for 3 months. The Student Assistant II qualifications are high school graduates enrolled in post-high school education programs, who have not accumulated at least 3 months of relevant experience.

Responsible for assisting with the leading of recreation activities and behavior management of participants for a summer camp. Assist in camp or program operations.
Minimum requirements: Graduation from high school/GED, plus three months experience in administering recreational programs. CPR and First Aid Certification is desirable for applicants hired at this level.

Responsible for assisting in the planning, leading, and conducting of recreation activities for a camp, behavior management of participants, and assisting in the evaluations of the activities and the participants.
Minimum requirements: Graduation from high school/GED, plus six months experience in administering recreational programs or facility monitoring. Certification in CPR and First Aid is required for all applicants hired at this level.

Special Requirements

If selected, all summer staff will be required to:

  • Agree to a criminal background check.
  • Candidates will be asked to provide two letters of reference and/or supporting documentation to verify work/school experience prior to an offer of employment. Letters of reference may be attached to this application.
  • Provide negative TB results or submit to a TB screening.
  • Attend all required trainings.
  • Some positions require a valid motorized vehicle operator's license and driving history record check.
  • Some positions require First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Be open to provide personal care as needed to campers (training provided).
