Summary

This Registered Nurse (Risk Management) position supports activities in the areas of Risk Management, Planning, and Management, Peer Review for Quality Management, Paid Tort Claims, Coordination of Administrative Investigation Boards, Review of Patient Incident Reports, Review of Occurrence Screens, Coordination of Morbidity and Mortality Reviews, and Institutional Disclosure. The incumbent coordinates all Risk Management activities carried out by departments at the facility.

Responsibilities

Duties and responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to the following:

-
Demonstrates knowledge of Risk Management principles and can analyze and integrate clinical data into Risk Management policy and operations.

-Develops and implements education programs related to areas of Risk Management such as Risk Assessment and Planning, Peer Review for Quality, Institutional Disclosure, Paid Tort Claims, Administrative Investigation Boards, and related Risk Management Activities.

-Maintains effective relations with the public, which results in a positive image of the VA. Maintains effective collegial relationships at all levels within the VHA Program Offices, facilities, and VISN.

-Promotes effective, balanced relationships with the Risk Management workgroups that result in joint and mutually advantageous partnerships.

-Evaluates Risk Management initiatives based on established professional, community/national and regulatory standards (i.e. VHA, JC, and ASHRM) and recommends changes in the guidelines to meet these standards.

-Assesses, determines and allocates adequate resources (i.e. human resources, educational, equipment, etc.) to develop, maintain and promote implementation of Risk Management activities at the facility.

-Serves as a liaison to the Risk Management Education/Workforce Development Field Advisory Council.

-Applies information management concepts and tools in data collection, identifies barriers, and offers solutions to the achievement of quality improvement.

-Analyzes clinical and administrative research in cooperation with OMLA that will improve clinical outcomes and identify clinical practices, risk/harm, and patterns and trends.

-Participates in significant professional activities including appropriate certification.

-Mentors/precepts staff and/or students for career advancement.

-Ensures that education and training programs meet the identified needs and are utilized appropriately.

-Coordinates curricula development and participates in national educational programs for all levels of personnel pertaining to Risk Management programs.

-Communicates VHA and Office of Quality, Safety, and Value (OQSV) goals, objectives, and achievements to internal and external stakeholders.

-Undertakes interdisciplinary and interdepartmental projects related to Risk Management, such as coordinating the annual facility Risk Assessment, Risk Prioritization, and developing the facility Risk Management Plan.

-Balances organization's needs and resources to effectively carry out the multiple missions of the program.

-Maintains current membership and takes an active leadership role in professional organizations within the community, state, and/or nation to further professional growth and knowledge.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN ) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE ). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

Grade Determinations:
The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

Physical Requirements:
The physical requirements of this position include lifting, prolonged standing, frequent bending, stooping, walking throughout a large facility, reaching, ability to use a keyboard or adaptive hardware for computer use, and repetitive motion. The mental/sensory requirements include recall, reasoning, problem-solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing, keyboarding, reading and logical thinking. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes-fast pace, requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent change in a sometimes-noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials.

Additional information

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time Nurses, and Nurse Anesthetists at the rate of 8 hours for each full biweekly pay period.
