STScI is the science operations center for several NASA missions. MAST is a multi-petabyte astronomical data archive that maintains the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), Kepler, GALEX, and TESS mission data. It will maintain mission data for the future James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), launching in 2021 and Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (Roman), launching in the mid-2020s. You will work with a team that is passionate about the work they do in support of astronomers around the world. We are located in Baltimore, MD. The role MAST is seeking a full stack web developer to help us build web applications and services for the communities we support. Our applications include rich search interfaces, web-based visualization tools, and data APIs. You will be part of an interdisciplinary team of astronomers, developers, testers, archivists and analysts. MAST is recognized as providing first-class support for its users and science teams and as such, an ability to communicate clearly and professionally with our community is a must. Your job will be to design and implement services that support the data archive of today and help shape future innovations that will allow MAST to continue to be the premier archive for data-driven astronomy in the 21st century. About you You're an experienced full stack web developer with significant experience in building web applications and services from scratch but also updatingreplacing legacy systems. You've developed scalable, reliable, highly-available secure and supportable production applications and take pride in shipping high-quality, secure-by-design code using a modern development toolchain. You thrive in an environment that offers you significant freedom to develop novel solutions but you also have a demonstrated commitment to shipping. You enjoy solving hard technical problems and explaining your solutions to your peers as well as management. You enjoy the challenge of migrating large, legacy codebases to new environments and working with your peers to develop roadmaps. You understand the critical role that automation plays in building reliable systems and you embrace the 'DevOps' mentality and believe that engineers should share operations ownership of the systems they build. Responsibilities Designing and developing new web applications and services for STScI's next generation data archive services Work with senior engineering staff to evaluate potential new technologies for STScI data management Provide technical guidance to other engineers and astronomers at STScI Contribute to technical roadmaps for migrating existing applications and services to new solutions Job Requirements Significant experience (5+ years) of building full stack web applications in a number of different programming languages Good working knowledge of modern JavaScript frameworks, HTML templating languages and SQLSolid understanding of automated testing Experience with designing data models and web APIs Good working knowledge of code versioning tools such as Git, Mercurial etc. BSBA in Computer Science, Engineering, a related field, or equivalent experience This position requires ship or Permanent Residence to meet ITAR requirements Beneficial Skills Familiarity with Web Services (RESTful APIs, SOAP etc) Working with large data sets and databases Developing complex, JavaScript-based visualizations Experience of working to accessibility and security compliance standards Experience with Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment (CICD) Experience of designing high-availability web applications The starting position and salary are commensurate with education and experience.
