Position Description Animal Caretaker (Noncontainment) Location MD - Fort Detrick Job Code 7061 # of openings 1 Apply Now Laulima Government Solutions, LLC is looking for a qualified Animal Caretaker to support our contract with USAMRIID at Fort Detrick in Frederick, MD. REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: ? Provide animal care and husbandry to the animals during experimental and non?experimental periods. ? Responsible for the receipt, examination, verification, and housing of all incoming laboratory animals. ? House animals in appropriate size and types of cages to meet protocol and regulation requirements. Ensures adequate provision of feed and water for all animals. ? Apply a high level of skill, observation, and knowledge of a wide variety of animal species and recognizes minute yet significant changes or disease. ? Transfer animals from cages to items or restraint or holding equipment for the purposes of transport, temporary containment, or experimental manipulation. ? Ensures room designations and quarantine procedures for incoming animals shall be strictly adhered to. ? Exercise considerable skill in tending to animals, pre? and post?operatively. ? Operate medical and research equipment to protect laboratory personnel and other animals from infection by organisms under investigation, utilization of rack and cage washers, and handling animals by appropriate procedures. ? Utilize biological and/or industrial safety procedures which are in direct relation to animal caretaking in a laboratory setting.Work requires continuous standing and walking on concrete or hard surfaced floors, climbing, working in a bent position and carrying materials up to 75 pounds. Greater strength, effort and agility are required in the handling, capturing and restraining of the stronger, more active animals. Work, as performed, exposes incumbent to unpleasant odors and noises and will require contact with animals. There is a hazard of burns from autoclaves and ultra?violet lights, skin irritations from cleaning and decontaminating solutions. The incumbent will have to wear protective clothing or equipment such as positive air pressure respirators or other personal protective equipment, for prolonged periods. Incumbent may work prolonged periods in auditory and physical isolation in a completely isolated containment. Variable work hours include 24/7 coverage, evenings/nights, weekends, Government holidays, and during unforeseen closures.DEGREE / EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: ? High School Diploma - ALAT certification is required within six (6) months of hire ? Animal husbandry experience in a laboratory environment ? Experience with at least three (3) of the following species is required: nonhuman primates, rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, ferrets, and/or hamsters ? MS Office: Word, Excel, and Outlook ? Experience with cage or rack style washers ? Ability to integrate in a teamwork atmosphere DESIRED SKILLS: ? Forklift certification ? ALAT certification - Prior experience working with nonhuman primates (NHP's) ? Working knowledge of GLP practices and documentation ? Autoclave experience CITIZENSHIP/SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: - Must be a US Citizen - Must be able to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
