Job Announcement

Responsible for the maintenance of a 18-hole regulation golf course, and the upkeep of a fleet of maintenance equipment. Appointee will work with the Park/Rec Specialist I (Assistant Grounds Superintendent) to recruit, hire and train all merit and seasonal maintenance employees. Initiates the purchases of all maintenance related equipment and supplies. Ensures compliance with the FCPA hazardous materials program and appropriate local, state and federal regulations regarding the purchase, application, storage and disposal of chemicals, pesticides and fertilizers. Implements a site-specific turf management program, including the application of various chemicals to the golf course. Inspects the conditions of all the park's grounds on a daily basis, determining whether or not each facility at the park should be open to the public. Works with the site manager in adhering to site and agency directed budget practices. Direct the Park Specialist I in maintaining an appropriate site safety program. Under the direction of the site manager.

Illustrative Duties

Manages the maintenance and operation of a large fleet of greens mowers, fairway movers, trim mowers, rough mowers, utility vehicles, spray tanks, sand trap rakes, seeders, aerators, etc.;
Develops and implements a detailed turf management plan for assigned greens, tees, roughs and lawn areas (and special complexities of cart paths);
Establishes criteria for and determines golf course playability and authorizes the opening and closing of the grounds;
Supervises the maintenance and operation of a large automated irrigation system including pumphouse, central computer, field controllers, valves and sprinkler heads;
Plans for and supervises major improvement projects such as greens and tees construction, cart path construction, sand bunker construction, site landscaping, pond dredging, etc.;
Authorizes purchase requests and invoices for payment;
Inspects park facilities and grounds for safety hazards and operational deficiencies, recommends improvements and initiates corrective measures;
Accountable for the purchase, storage and application and disposal of hazardous materials including pesticides, fertilizers and other turf care products;
Compiles and retains operational and safety records and complies with federal, state and County safety standards;
Develops budget justifications for capital equipment, staffing and annual operating supplies;
Hires, supervises, schedules and evaluates a medium sized staff;
Plans, schedules and conducts specialized on-site staff training;
Completes and submits various financial, administrative and statistical reports;
Adheres to revenue and expense limits, goals and guidelines for specialized areas of supervision.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the principles and practices of recreation center and/or park management;
Knowledge of fiscal record keeping and inventory procedures;
Ability to use a personal computer, applicable software and peripheral equipment;
Knowledge of methods and practices of golf course maintenance;
Knowledge of materials and equipment used in golf course maintenance;
Ability to identify, isolate and initiate repairs to equipment and irrigation systems;
Ability to identify and treat turfgrass diseases and pests;
Ability to read and understand blue prints, chemical labels and other technical documents;
Ability and skill to operate a variety of golf course maintenance equipment;
Ability to obtain necessary certifications.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

(Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for "Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to") Graduation from a two year associate degree program with major course work in agronomy, turfgrass management, recreation and parks, horticulture or related field plus two years experience as golf course superintendent or other applicable position at a golf course.

CERTIFICATES REQUIRED:
  • Motor vehicle operator's license
  • Virginia Pesticide Applicator's Permit
  • First Aid and CPR certification within 90 days of appointment.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a check of the Child Protective Services Registry, and a driver's license check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Three years of experience as an assistant golf course superintendent or other applicable position at a golf course. Experience with automated irrigation systems programming, repair, maintenance, and installation. Experience working in a supervisory position in golf course maintenance.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to bend and stoop to examine turf and take samples. Ability to climb on and off various golf course maintenance equipment vehicles. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
