Summary

The Cryogenics and Fluids Branch at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center is seeking an experienced candidate to serve as a Team Lead Engineering Technician. The lead oversees work in the highly specialized field of aerospace cryogenics, supporting advanced cryogenic technologies, research, and flight cryogenic systems with a specialty in sub-Kelvin (i.e., below 1K) and/or magnetic refrigeration systems.

Responsibilities

  • Leads the team in identifying, distributing, and balancing workload among employees; arranging for team member training; monitors and reports on the status and progress of work.
  • Leads, documents, studies and analyzes all observed characteristics of facilities, technology or equipment.
  • Oversees the development of test plans, documents test processes/procedures, evaluates test results and makes necessary design adjustments to achieve desired results.
  • Directs, plans, and conducts specialized test programs in support of sub-Kelvin and/or magnetic refrigeration systems.
  • Develops detailed test plans and procedures, monitor tests, interprets and analyzes data, and reports results. Performs development, analysis and conducts component level valuations.
  • Reviews and analyzes design specifications and drawings, as well as provides recommendations for changes to enable the creation of the desired final product.
  • Designs and develops experimental research instruments, devices, or system components for projects with undefined or uncertain performance requirements, incomplete or conflicting data.
  • Develops and implements practical processes for the fabrication and use of new technology in spaceflight systems, as well as research and development efforts.
  • Facilitates and coordinates the operation, modification, scheduled maintenance, problem diagnosis, calibration, and repair of support systems, subsystems and general apparatus for sub-Kelvin test facilities and cryogenic temperature control systems.

Qualifications

Applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for GS-13:

Specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-12) includes leading and or managing the design, development, fabrication, and test of highly specialized sub-Kelvin cryogenic systems, components and support equipment (e.g., adhesives, cryogenic suspension systems, growth of paramagnetic salt pills, fabrication and/or winding of superconducting electromagnets, integration/test of superconducting leads).
