Responsibilities

The incumbent performs reoccurring building and utility maintenance as well as operates water and wastewater utilities in accordance with Federal and State Regulations. Responsible for the operation installation, repair, and maintenance of potable water systems and controls with a variety of components. Must obtain valid waterworks operator license within 18 months of appointment.

Operates a commercial government vehicle (with a gross combination weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds or tow a vehicle not heavier than 10,000 pounds) in order to transport equipment and/or materials as part of their assigned duties. May operate cars and trucks and other equipment such as a Bobcat loader with attachments, front-end loaders graders and dump trucks. The incumbent must have or must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B within one (1) year of appointment.

Performs electrical tasks such as replacing light switches and household light fixtures, changing light bulbs, and assisting electrician when pulling wire in conduit and installing electric boxes. Operates a chain saw in order to buck, limb, cut and/or fallen trees and in performing this duty, the incumbent must obtain and maintain a current National Park Service (NPS) Working Faller certificate within two (2) years of appointment.

The incumbent may perform other duties such as painting, plumbing, welding; trails and grounds work; and asphalt work and road maintenance by repairing pavement surfaces, i.e., chuck holes, edge raveling, ruts, bleeding, grade depressions, and makes utility cuts.

RIDGE (District Office, Vesuvius VA) - MP 0 (Junction of Blue Ridge Parkway and Skyline Drive) to MP 106 near Roanoke, VA, traverses through six counties: Nelson, Augusta, Rockbridge, Amherst, Bedford, and Botetourt. Duty locations include James River (Bedford Co.), Peaks of Otter (Bedford Co.) and Montebello (Augusta Co).

  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You must possess and maintain a current Class B (or higher) Commercial Driver's License within one (1) year of appointment.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime work.
  • Occupancy of government quarters may be available.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • You must possess and maintain a current Water Treatment Operators Certificate, and you must be able to secure and maintain a valid Virginia Waterworks Operator License Level 6 within 18 months of entrance on duty. Please indicate the level of certification you currently possess.
  • You must obtain and maintain a current National Park Service (NPS) Working Tree Faller certificate within two (2) years of appointment.

Physical Demands: Physical effort is heavy to moderate, and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects or materials up to 50 pounds, unassisted, following proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. Frequently required to stand while working, climb ladders or scaffolding, and bend, stoop, climb, and work in awkward positions.

Working Conditions: Exposure to a variety of seasonal weather conditions while working outdoors (temperatures -40 to 90+ degrees). Subject to danger of falling from ladders or scaffolding. Exposure to dust, dirt, wind, and rain. May work with dangerous chemicals and around moving equipment; paint, solvents, etc. May be exposed to electrical shocks, and biting insects.
