Responsibilities

  • Looks after the condition of dogs' coats by shampooing, clipping, trimming and grooming. Keeps dog comfortable, safe and secure at all times. Advises owners on their dog's coat care, discusses with the dog's owner what type of grooming is needed.
  • Shampoos, dries, brushes, combs dog's coat to get rid of tangles. Trims dog with electric clippers or stripping knife into the right shape for its bread and styles with scissors. Clips dog's claws, cleans teeth and ears.
  • Maintains cleanliness of kennels and crates. Cleans and sanitizes tools and equipment, keeping both in good working condition.
  • Duties involve considerable physical effort including lifting animals weighing up 130 pounds, stretching, bending and working in awkward positions. May use greater strength or agility to restrain stronger or more active animals.
  • Schedules dog grooming appointments, coordinate with Kennel manager, calculate kennel and grooming fees, collect fees and completes appropriate paperwork.

  • Incumbent may also be required to complete a Tier 1 background investigation for a Common Access Card for physical access to federally-controlled facilities.


Qualifications

1. Requires thorough techniques, knowledge and experience in dog grooming.
2. Knowledge of animal's characteristics, and behavior.
3. Requires skill in handling dogs and apply this skill to transfer dogs into and out of kennels and cages without injuring animals or getting bitten or scratched.
4. Skillful in using corrects tools for grooming.
5. Requires basic clerical experience, making appointments, collecting fees and setting up and maintaining files.
