Summary

These positions are located within the Engineering Service, at the Richmond VA Medical Center, Richmond, VA. As a Maintenance Worker, you will perform work in maintenance and repair, preventative maintenance and completing work orders. You will be responsible for troubleshooting, diagnosing and making repairs in the following trades, plumbing, carpentry, electrical, air conditioning and painting.

Responsibilities

Your duties can include but are not limited to the following:

• Performs carpentry duties including repairs and maintains wooden structures such as furniture, railings, shelves, doors, bulletin boards, etc. Repairs cabinet and locker doors to include hardware, locks, tracks, etc. Installs and replaces ceiling tiles, bumper rails, handrails, corner guards, cove base, and other parts of buildings using hand and power tools.
• Performs painting duties including possess knowledge of standard surface preparation and coating methods and techniques. Applies coating materials so that the surfaces are free from skips, runs, and drips. Possess skills needed to sand, wire brush, scrape, spackle, and putty surfaces. Possess the skill needed to brush out, roll on, and spray coating materials, as well as the skill needed to apply other related methods and techniques.
• Performs electrical duties including Inspects and tests electrical lighting, power circuits and ballast transformers, and other simple elements of electrical systems, fixtures, and appliances. Renews circuits either by isolation and cutting out defective wiring and replacing it with new wiring, or by splicing ends of broken wires. Replaces and installs light fixtures, ballasts, fluorescent tubes, electrical outlets, light switches, etc.
• Performs plumbing duties including making repairs and may perform some installation of existing utilities and disposal systems; inspects, repairs and replaces fittings and plumbing fixtures to maintain water and drainage systems; repairs flush valves, faucets, showers, vacuum breakers, or other parts in leaky valves, water closets, etc.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Applicant will be required to lift, carry, push or pull a variety of materials and equipment such as fixtures, tools, ladders and testing equipment. Applicant will also be required to climb, balance, stop, kneel and crouch to make necessary repairs.

WORK CONDITIONS: Applicant usually works indoors; however, he/she may be occasionally exposed to a variety of weather conditions, both in winter and summer, in making repairs and installations on external work sites. Many work sites are dirty, dusty, greasy, poorly lit, cramped and with unpleasant orders.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications . For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
